IMPROVEMENT IN DENTAL PLUGGERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,197, dated August 31, 1875; application filed July 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEQRGE REHFUSS, of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improved Dental Plugger, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to automatic dental pluggers of the class in which the tool is forced in one direction by a spring, and in the other by a positive blow; and its objectis to impart a series of positive strokes to the tool in rapid succession to which end myimprovement consists in combining, in a plugging-tool, independent mallets, actuated directly from a common driving-shaft by a crank and pitman.
In the accompanying drawings of my improved plugger, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 a similar one at right angles thereto.
The case A contains a spring-plugger or tool-holder, B, of well -known construction, whose spring b retracts it after each blow to bring it within reach of the hammer again. Mallets 0 c, of such area as just to fill the bore of the case in which they reciprocate, which thus forms a guideway for them, are each connected, by its respective pitman G C, with a corresponding crank, d d, or a shaft, D, revolving in suitable bearings in the casing, and driven by a flexible or other shaft, E, from a dental engine or other suitable well-known way.
My invention, it will be seen, enables me to strike a series of positive, rapid blows upon the tool, each mallet acting in succession. In practice I have found two enough to do good work, but more might be used, if deemed expedient.
The instrument is direct-acting, very simple, and effective in operation. The force of the blow may be graduated by means of the check-screw collar f, which permits the case to be screwed more or less into the head, thus varying the distance between the crank-shaft and tool-holder.
I claim- 1. In a dental plugger, the combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the casing, the crank-shaft, its pitmen, the mallets carried thereby, and the spring-plugger or tool-holder, whereby a series of positive blows may be given directly upon the tool.
2. The combination, substantially as set forth, of the casing, the head in which the crank-shaft is mounted screwing thereon, and the check-screw collar, whereby the distance between the crank-shaft and tool may be varied to regulate the force of the blow.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
