To all 'whom t 'may concern Be it known that I, WILMER W. WESTRUP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chihuahua, in the State of Chihuahua, Mexico, have invented a new and useful Massaging Implement, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a massaging implement and one of its objects is to provide a device of this character utilizing an applicator having flexible ngers through which extend openings in communication with a suction pump adapted to operate intermittently for creating a suction through the fingers whereby during the movement of i the applicator over the surface being treated,
this intermittent suction will operate to withdraw impurities from the pores as they are opened by the movement of the fingers.
A further object is to 'provide simple means whereby the applicator is given a circular motion thus to produce a kneading action, the mot-ion being produced by simple and compact mechanism which will not readily get out of order and which requires but little power to operate it.
A further object is to provide suction means carried by the mechanism employed for operating the applicator.
Another' object is to provide an implement of this character which is cheap to manufacture and can be conveniently manipulated.
Withthe foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that Achanges in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
Tn said drawings z--Figure 1 is a section through the massaging implement. Fig. 2 is an elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 but showing all but the top portion of the cover plate removed, said top portion being show nin section. Fig. 4 isa section on line A-B Fig. 3.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a casing section which can be of any desired contour and proportions and which is provided, adjacent one end, with an outstanding boss 2'exteriorly screw threaded. This section 1 has an end wall 3 1n which is formed a substantially semi-cylindrical recess 4 and an angular recess -5. The angular recess is adapted to r'ecelve a bearing block 6 having a recess 7 therein which is substantially semi-spherica1. 'A cover section 8 is arranged upon the section 1 and has an end wall 9 provided wlth recesses 10 and lljcorresponding with and directly opposite. the recesses 4 and 7 Y respectively. A bearing block 12 similar to the block 6 is seated in the recess 11. The two sections 1 and 8 may be detachably connected 1n any manner desired, as by means of screws 13. An end wall 14 extends from the section 8 and laps the section 1 so that when the two sections are assembledVthey will form a housing in one end of which 1s provided a circular opening formed by the opposed recesses 4 and 10.
Engaging the boss 2 is a 4hollow handle 15. This handle may be secured in place byscrewing it onto the boss, or by fastening 1t 1n any other manner desired.' Extending p longitudinally through the handle and journerfface of the section 1. A collar 19 is secured to the shaft at a point within the handle 15 and bears against the boss 2 to hold shaft 16 against longitudinal displacement. The shaft 16 may be suitably connected to a flexible driving shaft 20 or to any other suitable means for actuating it.
Extending from the head 17 is a wrist pin 2 1'projecting through a slot 22 formed lon gitudinally within a lever 23. This lever has a ball 24 formed integral therewith and bearing within the recesses in the blocks 6 and 12, and projecting from the lever and through the recesses 4 and 10 isa stem 25 adapted to be detachably engaged by an applicator 26. Formed on or secured to the lever 23 is-a pump casing 27 which can be produced by enlarging the lever and forming a bore in the enlarged portion. A passage 28 extends from one end of this pump casing and through the ball 24 and the stem 25 so as to communicate with a chamber 29 formed within the applicator. Said applicator is preferably provided with flexible fingers 30l that they have openings 31 .extending through them from the extremitles thereof,

Fixedly connected to the wrist pin 21 so as to Lrotate therewith, is a crank arm 32 which is in turn pivotally connected to a pitman 33 attached to a piston 34 mounted for reciprocation in the pump casing 27. The piston may be formed with one or more openings 35 therethrough adapted to be closed by a valve 36 so'that during the movement of the piston 'toward the assage 28, air will escape through theopenmgs 35, whereas during vthe`v movement of the piston in the opposite direction, valve 36 will close the openings 35 and a suction will be set up through the openings 31 and chamber 29 into passage 28 and casing 27.
The slotted portion ofthe lever 23 is oliset or obliquely disposed as shown particularly in Fig. 1 and formed on or secured to the wrist pin 21 at the sides of the lever 23 are deflecting ribs 37 constituting cams.
These ribs or cams are so shaped as to cooperate with the obliquely disposed faces of lever 23 to impart a lateral swinging movement to the lever during the rotation of the shaft 16.
It will be obvious that during the rapid rotation of the shaft 16, the wrist pin 21, by traveling' in a circular path, will work successively against the side walls of the slot 22, thus to swing the lever 23 in one plane while at the same timethe cams or ribs 37 will work successively against the respective sides of the inclined or diagonally '.disposed portions of the lever 23 so as to oscillate said lever in a plane extending at right angles to the first plane of movement.
The comfpound movement thus set up as a result o the two actions mentioned will cause the applicator 26 to set hp a kneading Importance is attached to the fact that the suction means is carried by thc lever 23 to which the applicator is connected, thus greatly simplifying the mechanism and enabling the apparatus to be L7cheaply and compactly constructed without danger of getting out of order.
By removing the section 8 all of the mechanism in the implement is exposed and can be readilyinspected, oiled and repaired.
What is claimed is:-
1. A massaging implement including a casing, a lever mounted for universal swinging movement, an applicator connected to the lever, revoluble operating means within the casing and engaging thev lever kfor oscillating said lever in one plane of movement, for setting up an intermittent suction through the applicator.
2. A massaging implement including av casing, a lever mountedfor universal 'movement Within and extending beyond the casing, an applicator connected to the lever and having projecting fingers formed with apertures extending from the extremities thereof,.revoluble means Within the casing for simultaneously oscillating the lever in two directions thereby to impart a kneading action .tothe applicator2 and means movable with the lever and driven by said revoluble means, for 'setting up an intermittent suction .through the applicator.
3. A massaging implement including 3a casing, a lever mounted for universal movement therein and projecting beyond one end of the casing, a hollow applicator connected to the lever and having flexible fingers formed withV openings .extending therethrough from the extremities thereof, revoluble means within the casing for imparting universal movement to thelever and applicator, a pump carried by the lever and in communication with the applicator, and means operated by said revoluble means for 10o operating the pump to set up an intermittent suction through the applicator.
4. A massaging implement including a casing, made up of detaohably connected sections, a lever mounted forA universal v movement within the casing and having one end projecting therebeyond, a hollow ap'- plicator connected to the lever and having openings therein, a revoluble drive element, means operated thereby for imparting universal movement to the lever, a pump carried by the lever, means for actuating the pump during the movement of the lever, for setting up an intermittent suction through the applicator.
5. A massaging implement including a casing,n a handle extending therefrom, ashaft journaled within the kcasing and extending through the handle, a lever mounted for universal movement within the cas- 120 ing and having one end projecting from the casing, a hollow applicator connected to the lever and havin inlet openings, means operated by the sha and coperating with the lever for imparting universal movement to the lever, a pump carried by the lever,

6.
