DOUBLE-ACTING NUT-WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 743,096, dated November 3, 1903.
Application filed March 25, 1903. Serial No. 149,510. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY Dnrrnron PELLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at lone, in the county of Amador and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inDouble-Acting Nut- Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to nut and bolt wrenches, and pertains particularly to the class of gear-operated wrenches wherein the wrench-handle has a pinion to work a gearwheel which carries clamping-jaws.
The object of the invention is to provide peculiar connections between the jaws and head having a gear-wheel and the handle having a pinion, that the handle may be operated in line with the jaws and head to slide the jaws and. at right angles tothe head to turn the latter and the jaws.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench having a gear-head carrying slidable clamping-jaws operated by a pinion of a shaft extending through the gear-head and having the wrench-handle pivoted there,- to and a pawl-ratchet in the head to control the shaft.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of such peculiar construction and arrangement that the handle thereof is slidable to and from the wrench-head on a pinion-shaft extending through the head for the purpose of coupling the handle to turn the shaft and operate the clamping-jaws without turning or moving the head in which the jaws are slidably contained, such construction and arrangement being augmented by pivotally connecting the handle to the shaft, so that the handle may be swung at right angles to the shaft and by having the handleratchet constitute a pinion to mesh with the gear-head.
Other objects, advantages, and improved results are attainable in the wrench, as will be hereinafter described in the specification and pointed out in the claims to follow.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, Figure 1 is an elevation showing the handle in position to operate or slide the-clamping-jaws. Fig. 2 is a top view showing the handle in position to operate the gear-head and turn the jaws. Fig. 3 is an edge view with jaws closed. Fig. 4 is a detail section on the line 06, Fig. 1, with jaws removed. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the shaft parts. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the clamping-jaws. Fig. 7 is a sectional view of the gear-head. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of one of the ratchetpawls.
The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
The handle 1 has a pinion 2, which also constitutes a ratchet, engaged by a pawl 3, controlled by a spring-keeper 4 in a housing 5 on the handle. The inner end of the handle is U-shaped or has forks 6, terminating in pins 7, and a collar 8 is pivoted at 9 to and between the forks and is slidable on a shaft 10, having a head 11, workingin and through the U shaped opening. The shaft has a flange 13, a pinion 14, having a neck 15 and a flange 16, a ratchet-disk 17, provided with apertures 18, and a cushioned plate'34, slidable on the shaft, the functions of which will be hereinafter disclosed.
The head 19 has a gear 20, is countersunk at 21 and recessed at 22 on one side, and has a central bearing 23 for the shaft and a shoulder 24 for the pinion-flange 16, and the other side is provided with a dovetail groove 25. The clamping-jaws 26 have a stem 27, workingin said groove, and the stems have a rack 28, engaged by the pinion 14 to slide the jaws. The shaft-flange 13 is revolubly held in the recess 22 by keying the pinion 14 and set screwing its neck to the shaft. A ratchet-disk 29 within the countersink 21 is keyed to the shaft and has apertures 30 to receive the handle-pins 7 for turning the shaft. The gear-head is provided with ratchetpawls 31, controlled by springs 32, and havinga flange 33 to support and cushion the plate 34 slidable on the shaft between the ratchet-disk and the shaft-flange 13.
In operation the pawls 31 are kept in engagement with the ratchet-disk by the springs 32, and thereby lock the shaft and the clamping-jaws against relative movement. To open or close the jaws,the handle-pins7 are pressed through the apertures 30 and against the cushion-plate 34, which disengages the pawls 31 and ratchet-disk and releases said lock. The shaft may be turned as desired as long as said pressure is exerted by turning the handle, which will accomplish the opening and closing of the jaws. When the jaws have been thus set, the handle is withdrawn, leaving the parts locked. Then the handle is swung onits pivot to have the pinion 2 mesh with head-gear for screwing or unscrewing.
It will be understood that the handle-pins are simply'inserted in the disk-apertures and the handle turned for closing the jaws and that the latter are locked against reverse movement until said pins are pushed inward sufficient to release the shaft-ratchet.
It is obvious that the wrench may be operated in any desired position and that the connections between the handle and the shaft afford a most simple and convenient means of having the handle perform the functions of, first, locking thejaws; second, screwing or unscrewing, and, third, releasing the jaws.
Having thus described my invention, what Iclaini as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Awrench having agear-head, rack-jaws slidable in the head, a shaft working through the head and provided with a pinion meshing with the jaw-racks, a handle pivoted to the shaft and having a pinion to mesh with the head-gear, and means carried by the shaft and engaged by the handle to operate the shaft.
2. The combination, with the gear-head, the rack-jaws slidable therein, and a shaft working through the head and provided with a pinion, of a handle having a pinion to mesh with the head-gear, a collar slidable on the shaft and to which the handle is pivoted, andmeans carried by the shaft to couple the latter and the handle for operating the shaft.
3. The combination, with the gear-head, the rack-jaws slidable therein, a shaft working through the head and provided with a pinion meshing with the jaw-racks, and the handle, and a pinion on the handle adapted to be swung into mesh with the head-gear, of a collar slidable on the shaft and to which the handle is pivoted, and an apertured disk keyed to the shaft and engaged by the handle to turn the shaft.
4. The combination, with the gearhead, the rack-jaws slidable therein, and a shaft working through the head and provided with a pinion, of a pawl-controlled ratchet-disk keyed to the shaft, a handle pivoted to the shaft and having pins working through the disk to operate said ratchet-pawls, and a pawlcontrolled pinion on the handle adapted to be swung into and out of mesh with the headgear by the pivot movement of the handle.
5. In a double-acting wrench the combination, with a gear-head, the rack-jaws, and a shaft having a pinion meshing with the jawracks, of the handle, a pinion on the handle, and the slidable pivot connection between the handle and the shaft to permit the handle to slide the jaws and turn the head independently.
6. In a double-acting wrench the combination, with a gear-head, the rack-jaws, a shaft, and a pinion thereon meshing with the rackjaws, of the pawl and ratchet controlling the shaft, the handle provided with a pinion, and a slidable pivot connection between the shaft and the handle to permit the handle to work said pawl and ratchet and to operate the jaws and the head independently.
7. The combination, with the gear-head, and the shaft, of the ratchet-disk having apertures, the spring-controlled pawls in said head, and a plate slidable on the shaft to disengage said pawls and the ratchet-disk.
8. The combination,with the head, and the shaft turnable therein, of means to lock and unlock the head and shaft comprising a ratchet fixed to the shaft, pawls carried by the head, springs to force the pawls in engagement with the ratchet, and a plate adapted to be slid on the shaft against the pawls to disengage them.
