PATENT OFFICE.
FAMILY-acceso KEEPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 742,979, dated-November 3, 1903. Application filed November 19, 1902. Serial No. 132.001. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, ROLAND A. FLANAGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Angelo, in the county ofTom Green and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Family-Record Keeper, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to family record keepers.
The object of the invention is in a ready, simple, thoroughlyffeasible, and practical manner to preserve family recordse-such as marriages, births, and deathsin such form as to render them permanent and indestructible from the action of dampness, dust, time, and insects; furthermore, to facilitate the inspection of such records and to permit of their being readily made.
With these and other objects in view, as will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists, generally stated, in a plurality of metallic leaves made, preferably, from a` non-oxidizable metal, such as copper, and'a backing or assembling device for such leaves, the leaves being associated with the backing in such manner as to be easily separated therefrom when it is desired to place a record thereon.
The invention consists, further, in the novel construction and combination of parts of a family-record keeper,` as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts, there are illustrated four forms of embodiment of the invention each capable of carrying the same into practical operation, it being understood that the elements therein exhibited may be varied or 'changed as to shape, proportion, and'exact manner of as-l semblage Without departing from the spirit thereof.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is aview lin perspective of a record-book constructed in accordance with'the present invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of one of the leaves. Fig. 3 is a view in horizontal section through a book constructed in accordance with the form shown in Fig. 1. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are hori zontal sectional views through three other forms of books. Fig. 7is a detail view showing one manner of connecting the leaves with the back of the book. Fig. 8 is a detail view showing one form of pintle or rod for holding the leaves associated with. the back.
Referring to the drawings, and to Figs. 1, 2, and 3 thereof, l designates the backing, and 2 the leaves. The backing comprises a metallic back plate 3 and two semicircular end plates 4, secured thereto or formed integral therewith. Secnred to the back plate and to the end plates is a semicircular stiffener 5, arranged concentric with the end plates and disposed a sufficient distance inward from the peripheries thereof to present ledges 6,upon which the endsof theleaves bear.
lThe leaves are constructed, preferably, of a non-corrosive metal, such as copper, which may be or may not be silver or nickel plated, and -uponthe leaves the records of marriages, births, and deaths are exhibited either by being-stamped thereon or by being engraved, as may be preferred. Owing to the fact that the backing is non-yielding in character, it will be necessary to associate theleaves in a semicircle with the backing, as shown in Fig. 3, and for this purpose the end plates are provided. In order to shield the faces of the leaves from becoming marred in handling the book, the upper, lower, and outer edges have secured to them in any preferred manner protecting-strips 7. In Fig. 1 these strips are shown as secured to the leaves by rivets 8, while in Fig. 2 the strips are soldered thereto. It will be seen that when the leaves are open the outer edges thereof will bear upon the protecting-strips, and thus shield the record from effacement. The leaves are associated with the end plates through the medium of pintles or rods 9, which pass through openings 10 in said plates and through a tubular guide 11 on the rear edge of each leaf,
Vwhich guide may be formed of the metal of the leaf or may be a separate element and secured thereto. To facilitate detachment of the leaves when desired to engrave or stamp a record thereon, the pintles are threaded at one end at 12 to engage threaded openings in one ofthe end plates, the other end of the 4pintle being provided with a nick 13 to be engaged by a screw-driver.
In the form of invention shown in Flg. 4
. the stiffener 14 is triangular in shape, and
IOO
with this exception the construction of the book is the same as that already described.
In the form of embodiment of the invention shown `in Figs. 5 and 6 the stiffener consists of a series of stubs l5, which may be gradually increased in length from the sides of the back plate toward the center in a semi-v circle, as shown in Fig. 5, or in a triangle, as shown in Fig. 6, and to the outer edges of these stubs the leaves are hinged by an ordinary hinge-joint 16, as shown in Fig. 7. In
orderto render the stubs rigid, the end plates Having thus described the invention, what I claim isl 1. A record-book comprising a back plate, end plates carried thereby and provided with orifices, a semicircular stiffener disposed back of the rows of orifices, leaves disposed between the end plates to receive records and provided with hinge members, and pintles passing through the hinge members.
2. A record-book, comprising a back plate, semicircular end plates carried thereby and provided with orifices, a semicircular stener disposed back of the rows of oriices, metallic leaves disposed between the end platesto receive intaglio records and provided with hinge members, and pintles passing through the hinge members.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed mysignature in the presence of two Witnesses.
