To all whom t may concern;

Be it known that I, GEORGE N. BARcUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rensselaer, in the county of Jasper and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Halters, of which the following isa specication.

My invention relates to an improved construction of halter for use in shoeing horses with the horseshoeing apparatus which forms the subject of my United States Letters Patent No. 670,603, dated March 26, 1901.

The object of my invention is to provide a conveniently-adjustable halter which shall effectively hold the horses head while the animal is being shod against upward-anddownward and forward-andbackward movements for the purpose ofvmaintaining the body of the animal in a condition of quietude during the operation, and particularly with a view to preventing the animal from throwing its` head, with liability of injury to it resulting from encounter with the frame of the apparatus.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective View showing,r my improved halter in operative position upon the frame of the horeshoeing apparatus, of which a broken portion is represented, and adjusted upon the head of a horse, illustrated by a dotted representation; Fig. 2, a section of the halter taken at the line Zon Fig. l viewed in the direction of the arrow and enlarged; and Fig. 3, an enlarged section of a clamp detail, taken at the line 3 on Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.

The halter comprises three bands, hereinafter referred to as ropes, as they are preferably formed of rope, though they may be of leather or other suitable material, and adjustable clamps with a rope-tying hanger for connecting the ropes to form the halter.

A denotes the chin-rope, and B the noserope, each being provided on its ends with eyes a, preferably of metal and formed on the extremities of arms ot', embracing and secured to the ropes, and C is the neck-rope or head-rope, provided on one end with an eye device a a'.

5o D is a clamp comprising two castings b and c, formed, respectively, with lips b' and c' at one end and with similar half-ringed at the opposite end, and on the inner face of the body portion ofv each casting are formed two parallel transverse half sockets, whereby when the two castings are adjusted together face to face and separably connected by a bolt f, as represented in Fig. 3, the lips ZJ and c overlap one another, the half-sockets register to form the sockets e and e', and the half-rings d form a hanger d. 4

As will be seen, the animal, with its head held by the halter in the manner described, cannot move it to any material extent in any direction, and the construction adapts the halter to be readily adjusted upon an animal of any size and to be as readily removed.

The particular details of the construction shown and described, while they are believed to be best suited to their purposes, may be variously modied without departure from the spirit of my invention, which is therefore intended to include all such modifications.

' What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a halter for the purpose set forth, the combination of two ropes and retainingclamps therefor forming with the respective ropes a nose-loop and a chin-loop, said ropes presenting two forwardly-extending and two rearwardly-extending bitching ends, substantially as described.

2. Inv a halter for the purpose set forth, the combination of two ropes and retainingclamps therefor at opposite sides of the halter forming with the respective ropes a nose-loop and a `chin-loop, said ropes presenting two bitching ends extending forward from said side clamps and two bitching ends extending rearwardly from said side clamps, substantially as described.

3. A halter comprising, in combination, a chin-rope, a nose-rope, clamps formed of separable parts and containing sockets through which said ropes pass to form, respectively, a chin-loop having two forwardly-extending bitching ends and a nose-loop having two rearwardly-extending bitching ends, and a head-rope connected at one end with one of said clamps and adjustably connected at its t opposite end with the other clamp, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4. A halter comprising, in combination, a chin-rope, a nose-rope, clamps formed of separable parts and containing sockets through which said ropes pass to form, respectively, a chin-loop having two forwardly-extending bitching ends and a nose-loop having two rearwardly-extending hitching ends, a head! rope connected at one end with one of said clamps, and a rope-tying hanger connected with the other clamp and adapted to have the free end of said headrope adj ustably fastened to it, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

5. A halter comprising, in combination, a

chin-rope, a nose-rope, clamps containing sockets through which said ropes pass to form, respectively, achin-loop and a nose-loop, a head-rope connected at one end with one of said clamps, and a rope-tying hanger connected with the other clamp and having an opening through which to insert a loop in the free end of said head-rope, and recessed to receive said end when inserted underneath said loop, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

6. A halter comprising, in combination, a chin-rope, a nose-rope, 'a pair of two-part clamps each having its parts separably fastened together and forming a pair of sockets through which said ropes pass to form, respectively, a chin-loop and a nose-loop, and a head-rope connected at one end with one of said clamps and adjustably connected at its opposite end with the other clamp, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

7. A halter comprising, in combination, a chin-rope, a noserope, a pair of two-part clamps each having its parts separably fastened together and forming sockets through which saidropes pass to form, respectively, a chin-loop and a noseloop, a head-rope connected at one end with one of said clamps, and a rope-tying hanger connected with the other clamp and having an opening through which to insert a loop in the free end of said head-rope and recessed to receive said end when inserted underneath said rope, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

8. Ahalter comprising, in combination, a two-part clamp having its parts separably fastened together and forming sockets and a hanger-eye, a two-part clamp having its parts separably fastened t-ogether and forming sockets with an eyein one part and a stud on the other part to enter the eye, a chin-rope and a nose-rope passing through said clamps in relatively contrary directions to form, respectively, a chin-loop and a nose-loop, a head-rope connected at one end with one of the clamps at its said hanger-eye, and a ropetying hanger having a lip at one end containing an eye engaging the stud on said other clamp, an opening through which to insert a loop in the free end of said head-rope and re cesses at opposite sides of said opening to receive said end when inserted underneath said loop, substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
