, PATENTED N FEB 4:86851;l N
@nim mes 179mm @fmt `JAMES M. SEYMOUR, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 74,156, dated February 4, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN S0CKET-WREIIGH.,
TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES'M. SEYMOUR, of the city of Newark', in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented an Improvement in VSocket-Wrenches; and IvdoV hereby proclaim the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being herein had to the drawings occompanying this specilication as partof the same.
' The natureof my improvementconsists the adaptation of a. variety of. sockets to one holder, bringing broad surfaces together to receive the pressurennll steady the sockets. i
A handle, A, straight or bent, to suit circumstunces,vhns'its lower end, z, mode broad, either lot, concave, convex, or fluted, flot being preferred. A groove, y, is mode across'it to receive a. corresponding rib, z, upon the upper surface ofthe loose socket B, which surface is marde to'correspond with the surface-of A :tt A ring, C,
(its and turns easily upon the part w, onthe hzindleA. When the groove y and the rib :v ore o. dove-tail, o corresponding,l part, o, of the ring C is left open, to allow thc rib a: to pass into thc groove y. By turning the ring,
the socket is securely retain'ed on the farce of the handle. Il a square-edged rib is preferred, thei'ring can, by
slots and pins, he itself` held, and at the same time hold the socket to the handle. By a. square, u, on the top of n. straight handle, another socket-wrench can be used 'to lengthen it to meet :my extraordinary need to reschl the bolt-head or mit.
Sockets of varied sizes and formsiitted to the handle can be carried by the workmen in his pocket, while otherwise many wrenches ore required.
What I claim, and desire to secure, isy The handle A, with it-shroad bottom, made substantially as shown.
Also the shifting-socket wrench, :is a new a-rticle of manufacture.
JAMES M. SEYMOUR.`
