Parana arrest DRAFT EQUALIZING CLEVIS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,319, dated October 13, 1903. 7
Application filed April 80,1903. Serial No. 155,061. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH G. Evans, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baker City, in the county of Baker and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Olevis,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in clevises for equalizing the draft of a team of horses, and has for its object to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efficient device of this character by means of which a lagging horse will be given an advantage in leverage on the doubletree.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended, it being understood that various changes in form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention. a
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a doubletree and set of swingletrees having an equalizing-clevis constructed in accordance with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of a portion of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of one of the clevises detached.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates the doubletree, 2 the swingle-. The clevis through or secured in any suitable manner to the top and bottom of the doubletree and by means of which the clevis is permitted to oscillate to equalize the draft strain.
The construction of the device will be readily understood, and the operation thereof is as follows: Should one of the horses fall in the rear of the other, the draft strain willcome upon the pin 9 of the outer arm of his clevis, and the draft strain at the other end of the doubletree will come upon the inner pin 9 of that clevis, so that the rear horse will be drawing upon the longer arm of a lever and the forward horse will be drawing upon the shorter arm of the lever. This gives an advantage of leverage to the rear horse, so that he is able to regain his position at right angles to the line of draft, in which position the draft strain comes equally upon both theforward pins or lugs, each horse then drawing an equal amount of the load.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided an exceedingly simple and effective equalizing-clevis which automatically adjusts itself according to the draft of the animal, the leverage being increased or decreased by regulating the distance between the segmental slot.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--=- As a new article of manufacture a draft equalizing clevis formed of a metallic strip centrally bent into U shape and having its terminals bifurcated to form arcuate arms each provided with a segmental slot or recess.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH G. EVANS.
