LOUIS A. BEEP, OF HARDY, IOWA.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 756,525, dated April 5, 1904..
Application filed November 10, 1903- Scrial No. 180,546. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS A. BEEP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hardy, in the county of Humboldt and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Equalizers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to equalizers or eveners for use with four horses; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is plan View of a four-horse equalizer constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is a front view showing the principal portions of the device.
A and B are two main levers which are pivotally connected together by a pin 6, to which a clevis or draft attachment O is also connected. This draft attachment serves to connect the equalizer to the load. The lever B overlaps the end portion of the lever A, being provided with a short arm Z) at that end over the lever A.
D is a link or .pair of links pivoted to the short arm 6 of the lever B.
E is a link or pair of links pivoted to the outer end of the lever B, and F is a link or a pair of links pivoted to the outer end of the lever A.
A doubletree G is pivoted to the link'or links F, and g g are two swi'ngletrees pivotally connected with the ends of the doubletree Gr.
H is a swingletree which is pivoted to the link or links E.
I is an auxiliary lever which is pivoted to the link or links D and which is arranged at an acute angle to the main lever B. This lever I has a short arm 2' on one side of the link D, which is pivoted to a bracket J by a pin 7'. The bracket J is rigidly secured to the lever A. The longer arm of the auxiliary lever I projects beyond the pin 5, which connects the two main levers together. and K is a link or pair of links pivoted to the free end portion of the lever I. L is a swingletree which is pivoted to the said link or links K.
A horse orother draft-animal is connected to each swingletree, and the device is specially intended for use in connection with large riding and walking plows. The various levers are so proportioned that each animal is constrained to pull equally and all side draft is prevented. and'the other three horses walk on the land.
hat I claim is- 1. In an equalizer, the combination, with two main levers pivoted together, one of the said levers having a short arm which overlaps the other said lever, and a draft attachment for the load connected to the two said main levers at their point of pivotal connection with each other; of draft connections attached to the outer ends of the said main levers, a link pivoted to the short arm of one main lever, an auxiliary lever pivoted to the said link and having a short arm which is pivotally'supported from the other said main lever, and a draft connection attached to the free end portion of the said auxiliary lever.
2. In an equalizer, the combination, with two main levers pivoted together, one of the said levers having a short arm which overlaps the other said lever; of draft connections attached to the outer ends of the said main levers, a link pivoted to the short arm of one main lever, a bracket secured to the other said main lever, an auxiliary lever pivoted to the said link and arranged at an acute angle to the said main lever to which the said link is connected and projecting across the pivot connecting the two said main levers, said auxiliary lever having also a short arm which is 1 pivoted to the said bracket, and adraft con-.
nection attached to the free end portion of the said auxiliary lever.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS A. BEEP.
