To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK M. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Farmville, in the county ot' Prince Edward and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices for the Fly-Fronts of Trousers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters ot reference marked thereon, which form a part of this spe`cifieation.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment-fasteners; and it consists in the provision of a novel hook and eye which are adapted to be fastened to the buttonhole-flies, especially ot' trousers, by means of rivets or other metallic fastenings and dispensing entirely with the sewing on of buttons and with buttonholes.

More specifically the invention consists in the provision of a series of metallic plates which are recessed and bent u pon themselves, serving the purpose of an eye and having integral therewith ashank portion which is clenched by any suitable means to the edge of the fly and adapted to receive an integral cross-piece of alhook which is stamped from a single piece of metal and alsoprovided with a shank portion which is clenched to the opposite iiy, said crosspiece designedto engage in the recess of a plate which is secured to the edge of the opposite fly.

The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of' parts,which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan View of the flies of a pair of trousers, showing my improved fastening devices applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a detail View of a fastening-hook, showing integral shank portions which are adapted to be clenched to the fly. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the eyes made of a single piece of metal and having a shank portion for elenching the same to the fly. Fig. et is a hooked member which has an integral plate with a shank portion adapted to be clenched to the opposite ily of the trousers. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the form shown inA Fig. 4, but with the cross-bar or hooked portion bent at substantially right angles to the plate. Fig. G is a detail view ot the plate shown in Fig. 3, which is bent to form a socket for the reception of the hook shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a detail view of the plate shown in Fig. 6, illustrated as clenched to the fly of the trousers. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the form shown in Fig. 5 as attached by the rivet or other clenching means to the Hy of the trousers, and Fig. 9 is a perspective View of the form shown inFig. 3. Figs. 9 and 10 are detail sectional views through the two members illustrated in Figs. 7 and 8.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and A designate the two flies of a pair of trousers, one fly, A, being the edge in which buttonholes are usually formed, but which are dispensed with entirely in the present invention. The metallic plate or eye B, which I utilize in place of a buttonhole, comprises a plate (shown clearly in the detail views) made of a single pieceofmetal and having a slot B formed therein and an integral cylindrical shank portion C, which is made of suitable metal which Will easily clench when inserted in the ily when pressure is applied thereto in a manner similar to the attachment of eyes in shoes, (itc. Said plates B are clenched to the fly A at suitable intervals along the edge of said fly, and before the plates are clenched to the cloth they are bent inv the form illustrated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, in which a slotted hook is provided for the reception of the cross-bar D, which is formed integral with the plate D', said plates D being utilized as a substitute for buttons, which are commonly in use. .Integral with the plate D' is a shank portion d, which is similar to the shank portion before described upon the plate B and is adapted to be clenched to the fly A. Said bar D is bent in a plane at right angles to the plate D, as shown clearly in Fig. 5 of the drawings, and after the plate D is inserted in the fly A in the manner illustrated in Figs. l and 8 of the drawings the shank portion d is clenched securely to the iiy, thus securely ICO holding the plate in the position illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Said cross-bar D is positioned opposite the plates B, and when the two flies are brought together the contracted portion d', which connects the bar D with the plate D', enters oneotthe slots B in a plate B directly opposite, and when all of the bars D are caught in a similar manner in the respective plates D it will be observed that the two flies will be securely held together, and by the construction illustrated there will be a slight play between the connecting hooks and eyes, so as to allow for a slight strain or movementof the two ilies incident to movements of the bodyin different positions.

Referring to Fig. l of the drawings, I have shown a plate E, which is provided with a shank portion E, which is adapted to be clenched in the ily A, and said plate is made, preferably, in the'form illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, in which three shank p0rtions E are shown which are adapted to be clenched to the ly of the garment, and afterward the free end of said plate E is bent upon itself, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings, forming a hook which is adapted to engage underneath a bar F, which is provided with the usual clenching shank portions F at its ends, which are fastened to the tly A. Referring to Fig. 1 of the drawings, it will be seen that I have applied a plate D' tothe end H ot' the ily A and which plate is adapted to engage a slotted hook B, which is similar to the hooks and eyes which are shown as fastened to the edge of the ily A.

While I have shown a particular construction of garment-fastener embodying the features of my invention, it will be understood that I may make alterations in the detailed construction of the device Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A fastening device for the iiy-fronts of trousers, comprising a series of hook-shaped plates which are U-shaped and adapted to be secured adjacentto one edge to the ilyfront of a garment, each of said plates having a slot extending centrally from the free edge longitudinally of the plate and extending around the curved portion thereof, combined with a series of plates D adapted to be fastened to the opposite dy of the trousers and each having a contracted U-shaped shank portion d terminating in a bar D at right angles to said shank portion and parallel to the plates D', said bar D adapted to engage the curved portions of the plates B, the shank portion adapted to have a slight play in the slot of the plate B, as set forth.
