Description

D. PIERCE- Pattern for Drafiing Sleigh Bodies Patented Feb. 4 1868.
DENNI S' PIERCE, OF WA'YERLY, IOWA.
Letters Patent No, 74,12 dated February 4, 1868.
TIMPROVEMENT In rarrsnn ron DRAUGHTING stares-Booms. i
fiilp firlnhule new in iaflgne items atent nut mating and at fly: same.
TO ALL Wnon IT MAY concerns:
Be it known that I, DENNIS PIERCE, of Waverly, in the county of Bremer, and State of Iowa, have invented a Pattern for Draugbting Sleigh-Bodies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification in whichr I Figure 1 is a side elevation of'one side of the framing of a cutter-sleigh.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the improved pattern. V
Similar letters of'reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the laying ofi' ofsleigh-stufl' in the manufacture of cutter-'sleighs, i
so that the bent pieces of wood can be readily marked off for cutting and boring.
The naturecf my invention consists in a pattern-board, which is constructed with a raised panel on one side of it, of the shape of the body of the sleigh; and also in shaping this pattern-board, so that all the parts composing the framing of one side of a sleigh can be laid upon the board atpthesame time, andin the positions which they will occupy in the-sleigh; also in having certain determined points or marks upon said board, jby
means of which the length of each portion of the frame, and the relative positions ofthe bolt-holesand mogtises therein, can be accurately determined. and marked oil, as will be hereinafter described.
To enable others skilled in the art to understand my invention, Iwill describe its construction 'and operation.
In the accompanying drawings, Arepresents the'pattern-board, having a raised panel, B, in the centre,
which is made of the form of one side of the body of the'sleigh, for which the pattern is designed. 'b I are marks across the panel 13, which arearranged at the points where it is desired to make bolt-holes, in the top and bottom raves, C and D, for receiving the tie-bolts, shown in fig 1. c is a mark on the board A for designating the point where the arm-piece E joins the top rave C. The raves, C and D, join at the points 01 and e, and the/bottom rave D is thence continued to the points, fand g, upon the boardA, where it iscut ofi aud finished. The board A is curved upon its bottom edge inthe shape of a sleigh-runner, as shown in the drawing, and so constructed, with reference to the panel B, that a runner, F, placed around it, will meet the bottom rave D at the point it, as shown in the drawing, fig. 2. The point 'i on the board A-marks the rear termination of the lower part of the runner. j, k, and Z are marks upon the board A, showing where the knees are to be placed, by means of which marks the mortises for the knees can .be laid off on the'runner F and rave D.
, In laying off material for a sleigh, it is only necessary to place the pieces F C D upon the board A, in the position which they are intended to occupy when finished, and, by means of the points above referred to, the mortises and holes can be marked upon the frame, as well as the proper length of each .piece, thus greatly expediting the work, and insuring uniformity of shape. I
' Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A pattern-board, A, with elevation B, constructed and adapted for laying oif work for sleighs, substantially as described.
