Be it known that I, CHESTER LANG/A, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Center-ingrl Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in implements for making center marks in metal and other material, as for locating the center of a. space through whichl a hole is to be drilled, etc., and its objects are: first, to provide a means whereby the locality of the center of the hole to be drilled may be readily ascertained; second, provide a means whereby the small center point may be encircled with a small circular' mark; third, to provide a means whereby the center mark may be surrounded with both a small circle and a large circle with the center mark exactly concentric with both circles; fourth, to provide a means whereby a central center mark, and an eccentric mark and circle may be made adjacent to, or independently of the center mark.
I attain these objects by the mechanism and arrangement of parts shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. l is an elevation of the tool complete. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal 'section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the inner tool carrier with the tool in place, showingthe lower end of the marking tool eccentrically located. Fig. 4.- is a like view with the marking tool centrally located, at the lower end. Figs. 5, 6 and 7 are designed to show the several center markings possible with this tool.
In the construction of this tool I make a tubular body l having both ends exactly at right angles with the sides of the body. I then make a. marking tool, as 2, that will exactly fit into the hollow of the body l in such a manner that there can be no sidewise movement. or looseness between them and yet the tool 2 will revolve freely, so the point d maybe made to form a circle, as 2, upon an object, as a piece of metal. The ends of the marking tool 2 are made upon a sharp angle with two of its sides, as shown at C--C to form the sharp edges at d. This tool has a diagonally located hole, as f, drilled through it from end to end, so located that a tool. 3, may be passed through it and may be worked freely. both longitudinally and revolubly, in it. one end, as at c, of the tool 2 is exactly central so that with the tool 3 in place with thc centering end, a, downward, a center mark will be made indicating the exact center of the body l, as at g in Figs. 5 and 6, and if the tool 3 is reversed and the end b placed upon the metal and the tool made to revolve 2', as in Fig. 7, and by reversing the tool 3.

Then forming the center mark, g or g', the tool 3 should be raised upwardly in the tool 2 and dropped, or forcibly projected upon the surface to be marked, until an adequate indenture is made, when, if the `marginal circle, as t or is desired, the tool 3 must be placed with the end b upon the surface to be marked and, pressing firmly upon the tool, it should be made to revolve until the desired result is attained.
The parts 2 and 3 are to b made of the best of steel, and the points a, b, and Z must be tempered to such a degree as to perform their respective onices without danger of dulling the cutting, or marking points or edges. v
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new in the art, is:

In a. centering tool, a tubular supporting body, a marking tool circular in cross section passed through the said tubular body and revoluble therein, said marking tool having a round hole passing through it concentric with its periphery at one end and eccentric with its periphery at the other end, and the ends of said. marking tool formed obliquely to provide sharp marking edges. and a centering tool passed through said hole in said marking tool, one end of said centering tool pointed to form a center mark, the other end of said centering tool formed diagonal to provide a marking edge to form a circle around the center mark.
2. In a centering tool, a. tubular supporting body, a, marking tool circular in cross sect-ion und fitted to pass through the hole in the body-end to revolve freely therein, a peripheral marking edge formed at each end of the marking tool, said marking tool having a hole therethrough, concentric with the periphery at one end of the marking tool and eccentric with the periphery of the marking tool at the other end, and a Centering tool made to pass freely through said hole and to revolve freely therein, the marking points and edges upon said tools so tempered that they will mark freely upon a metal surface Without material Wear upon Said points and edges;
