sHAFT-o N'rnn-mfnmner Ev'i Application'filed May 24, 1923, Serial in. 641,158. Renewed my 9, 1924. p
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIZA H. FON- TAINE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Petersburg, in the county of Nelson, State of North Dakota, have invented. a new and useful Shaft-Center-Finding Device; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to shaft center finding devices, and has for its object to provide a device of this character, by means of which the exact center of a shaft may be easily and quickly ascertained and marked.
A further object is to provide a shaft center locating device comprising a scaled bar, on which bar sleeves are slidably mounted and provided with arms for engaging the opposite sides of a shaft. The sleeves have link connections with a vertically slidable member mounted on a sleeve at right angles to the bar, and consequently upon an upward or downward movement of the slidable member the sleeves will be moved inwardly or outwardly. Also to provide a center punch in the bar carried sleeve, by means of which center punch the center of the shaft held between the shaft engaging arms may be accurately marked.
A further object is to form the shaft engaging arms semicircular shaped in transverse cross section, thereby forming spaced shaft engaging edges at opposite sides of the shaft for accurately holding the device centered.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings described and claimed, it being understood that changes, in the precise embodiment of the invention, may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing Figure l is a perspective view of the center finding device.
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the lower portion of the device, showing the same applied to a shaft.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a bar, which bar is provided with a scale 2, whereby the center of the shaft may be accurately gaged. Extending'outwardly from one side of the bar 1 is a sleeve 3, which sleeve is disposed at a right angle to the bar 1, and is adapted to receive and gulde a center punch 4, in a manner whereby its point 5 will register with the center 1 ofthe bar 6, after said bar is centered in the device. Slidably mounted on the bar 1 at opposite ends thereof are rectangular shaped sleeves 7, which sleeves are provided with parallel shaft engagingarms 8, adapted to engage opposite sides of the shaft 6 for centering the shaft in relation to the center punch 4. Sleeves 7 have pivotally connected thereto at 9 links 10, which links are pivotally connected at 11 to a member 12, slidably mounted on the'sleeve 3. The links 10 are of equal lengthoand consequently it will be seen that when the arms 8 are moved inwardly into engagement with the shaft disposed therebetween the member 12 will move upwardly thereby allowing the sleeves 7 to move inwardly at equal distances from the center of the centerfpunch 4, consequently the device will automatically center itself on the shaft 6 with the point 5 of the center punch 4 in registration with the center 01" the shaft, at which time the center of the shaft may be marked if so desired by imparting a percussive blow on the end 13 of the center punch.
The shaft engaging arms 8 are preferably semicircular shaped in cross section as shown, therefore it will be seenthat the edges 14 thereof are in parallel relation to eachother, and that space engaging edges are provided whereby, when said edges engage opposite sides of the shaft is larger than the radius of the arms 8, the device will be held against tilting and will automatically adjust itself.
From the above it will be seen that-a shaft centering and finding device is provided which is simple .in construction and one wherein the center of shafts of various diameters may be quickly located and marked.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is A center locating and marking device for shafts comprising a bar, sleeves slidably mounted on the bar at opposite ends thereof, shaft engaging arms carried by said sleeves and disposed at a right angle to the bar and in parallel relation to each other, a right augularly disposed sleeve carried by the bar at the opposite sides to engaging arms are in engagement with up- 1 the shaft engaging arms, n member slidp osite sides of the shaft.
