PATENT OFFICE.
TABLE ATTAGHMENT FOR CHAIRS.
SPEClIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,019, dated October 13, 1903.
Application filed July 27, 1903. Serial No. 167,15. (No model.)
To all whom 2225 may concern.-
Be it known that I, J EssIE A. DALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Daleville, in the county of Lackawanna and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Table Attachments for Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates particularly to table attachments for chairs, which attachment is adapted to be supported on the arms of a chair.
Novelty and improvement is claimed with respect to a combined table and desk arrangement which provides a compartment under the table-top to receive books or other things, andthe compartment fits between the arms of the chair, so as to retain the table in position thereon.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view with the table-leaf closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with it open. Fig. 3 is afront elevation showing the arms of a chair with the attachment applied thereto, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the table leaf or top, and it is hinged at one side, as shown at 7, to an under leaf or top 8. Tape-stays 9 prevent the upper leaf from falling when lifted. Both leaves have a body-recess, as at 10.
At 11 a casing or box is indicated, secured to the under side of the lower leaf 8, which has an opening of suitable or sufficient size therein to enable articles to be placed in or removed from the box. The box is of less size than the table-top, so that a rabbet is formed at the ends of the table into which the arms of the chair fit. The box is of such size that it fits snugly between the arms of the chair, and the tops of the attachment .rest upon and extend sidewise beyond the arms; The attachment is thereby held in place and prevented from slipping off sidewise.
The attachment will be found very useful and convenient for children and invalids. Thebox may conveniently receive books, toys, and the like, and when the upperleaf is closed down it forms a cover over the opening and a smooth and unobstructed tabletop. A suitable covering of fabric may be applied to the places which come in contact with the arms of the chair, so as to avoid scratching thereof.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A table attachment for chairs, comprisingupper and lower leaves hinged together, and a box secured to the lower leaf, said lower leaf projecting beyond the sides of the box, to rest on the arms of the chair, and having an opening into the box adapted to be covered by the upper leaf.
2. A table attachment for chairs, comprising abox fitting between the arms of the chair, a leaf forming a top thereon extending beyond the sides of the box and having an opening therethrough into the box, and a removable upper leaf upon the lower leaf and adapted to cover said opening.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JESSIE A. DALE.
