SNAP-HOOK'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,014, dated October 13, 1903. Application nel sammy le, 190s. serial nu. 143.547. (No model.)
.To all whom t may concern,.- v
Be it known that I, ROBERT F. Covnnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salida, in the county of Stanislaus and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snap-Hooks; and I do declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved snap-hook; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a snap-hook having a spring-pressed bolt provided with stop elements in combination with a spring-pressed stop-latch adapted. to coact with said stop elements of the bolt to lock the latter both in closed and in open position, the said stop-latch being adapted for operation to disengage the bolt by the pressure of the thumb upon it and the snap-hook being by this improved construction prevented from becoming casually displaced.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation, partly in section, of a snaphook embodying my improvements, showing the bolt in closed position and the stop-latch engaged therewith to lock the same in such position; and Fig. 2 is a similar Viewvshowing the stop-latch in position to disengage the bolt and permit the latter to be nuoved to open position.
In the embodiment of my invention here shown the body l of the snap-hook is provided on one side with a longitudinal slot 2,in which operates the thumb piece 3 of the springpressed bolt 4, which by the action 01": the spring 5 is normally engaged with the bill 6 of the hook, as shown in Fig. l. In the opposite sideof the body-l is a longitudinal opening 7, in which is placed a stop-latch S, which is pivoted, as at 9, on a screw stud or pin,.is provided at its rearwardly and outwardly eX- tended end with a stop-lug l0, and is provided atits inner end with an outwardly-swelled iinger-piece 1l, which extends beyond the outer side of the body 1 and is adapted to be pressed by the finger or thumb of the operator to turn the stop-latch on its pivot. Thesaid stop-latch `is'iurther provided near its inner end on its inner side with a notch 12, which is engaged .by a spring 18, here shown as acoiled exten- "sile spring, the said spring being disposed in one end of the opening or recess 7 and abut-Y ting against a shoulder 14 in one side of the said opening. The bolt 4 is provided with stop elements l5 16, which are here shown as stop-notches adapted to be engaged by the stop-lug l0 of the spring-pressed latch S. When the bolt is in closed position, the stopnotch 16 is engaged by the .stop -lug of the latch. When the bolt is in open position, the stop-notch' 15 is engaged by the said stop-lug of the latch. The latter may, as lnereinbe-V fore stated, be readily pressed by the thumb or finger of the operator to disengage its lug from either of the stop-notches of the bolt. The 'thumb-piece 3, which is here shown as a screw attachedto the bolt and having a milled head, is adapted for use in opening the bolt against the tension of its spring 5.
FromV the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, inode of operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily apparent, it is thought, without requiring a more extended explanation.
' Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacricing any of the advantages of the invention. j
- Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A snap-hook having a spring-pressed bolt provided with stop elements, in combination with a spring-pressed stop-latch adapted to coact with said stop elements of the bolt to lock the latter both in a closed and in an open position, said stop-latch having a linger-pieceprojecting beyond one side of the body of the i.snap-hook, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set rny hand in presence of `two subscribing witnesses.
ROBERT F. COVERT.
