  • My invention relates generally to devices for holding or suspending articles, and more particularly to a device specially adapted for holding razor-strops. It isnecessary in honing razors to use several .different materials in order that a sharp and smooth edge may be quickly obtained. In the manufacture of razo'-strops it is customary to bind together at one end two straps, which are provided with a common swiveled supporting-eye to engage a fixed support and at the same time permit a rotation of the strop, so as to present either surface desired to the razor. It is, however, frequently desirable to have ready for convenient use more than the two different sharpening materials afforded by a single strop constructed as above described..

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. '739,928, dated September 29, 1903. Application filed September 20, 1901. Serial No. 75,924. (No model.)
To all-whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY G.-RRDAN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Chi-- i form a part of this specification.
My invention relates generally to devices for holding or suspending articles, and more particularly to a device specially adapted for holding razor-strops. It isnecessary in honing razors to use several .different materials in order that a sharp and smooth edge may be quickly obtained. In the manufacture of razo'-strops it is customary to bind together at one end two straps, which are provided with a common swiveled supporting-eye to engage a fixed support and at the same time permit a rotation of the strop, so as to present either surface desired to the razor. It is, however, frequently desirable to have ready for convenient use more than the two different sharpening materials afforded by a single strop constructed as above described..
An object of my invention is to provide a holding device for securing to a single support two honing-strops, each composed of two difierent materials, so that either of the strops may be freely reversed to present the desired surface without interference from contact with the strop which is not in use.
A further object of my invention is to provide a holding device for razor-strops which will be simple in Construction, inexpensive in manufacture, and effic'ient in use.
My invention consists, essentially, in two hooks each adapted to receive the swiveled eye of a razor-strop, an intermediate portion uniting the hooks, and a supporting device swiveled to the intermediate portion.
Myinventiohwill-be more fully described -hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in'which the same is illustrated as embodied in several convenient and practioal forms, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my improved holding devicewith two razorstrops supported thereby, the lower portions of the strops being broken away; Fig. 2, a plan View of a strip of metal from which one form of my device may be made; Fig. 3, a Vertical sectional view through the center of the holding device; Fig. 4, a View similar to Fig. 3, showing a modification; and Fig. 5, a View similar to Figs. 3 and 4,il1ustrating another modified embodiment of myinvention.

Reference-'letters A' and A indicate two hooks which are arranged back to back, with their open ends projecting in opposite directions. A indicates an intermediate portion which unites the hooks and is preferably formed integral therewth. Suitable retaining means is provided to secure the hookslin thedesired positions, such means comprising either a rivet c, as shown in Fig. 3, or a band c', passing around the back portions of the hooks. (Illustrated in Fig.`4.)
The holding device is provided with a swiveled supporting means, such means being illustrated in the form of an eye B, providedwith an end b, which passes through an opening formed in the intermediate portion A of the holding device. The end b may be retained in the intermediate portion A by any suitable means-as for instance, by onlarging or heading the same-whereby the supporting-eye B is prevented from being detached from the holding device, but at the same time is permitted to turn freely, owing to the diameter of the hole through the intermediate portion being larger than that of the end b of the eye B.
The holding device may bemade of any suitable material and in any preferred maner. In Fig. 2 I have shown a strip of metal, which may be readily bent into the shape desired to form the holding device. The end portions A' and A are bent to form the hooks, while the intermediate portion A serves as a support through an opening a, in which the end of the swiveled eye B may be' Secured. The perforations a' a' are brought into register to receive the rivet c, as clearly indicated in Fig. 3. A band c' may be passed around ioo the back portions of the hooks in lieu of the rivet c to retain the hooks in proper position, as illustrated in Fig. et.
While the holding device may Conveniently be made of a strip of steel or other suitable metal, it may also be made of wire, as illustrated in Fig. 5, portions of the wire being fiattened to receive the end of the swiveled supporting-eye and also to receive the retaining-rivet c.
In order to better illustrate the utility of my invention, I have shown in Fig. 1 two razor-strops supported thereby, each composed of two different surfaces E and E' and D and D', respectively. These strops are provided with the usual means for supporting the same, comprising yokes e and d, respectively, through which are swiveled theends of supporting-eyes e' and d'.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The swiveled eye B is secured to a hook or other support after the swiveled eyes of the razor-strops have been inserted in the hooks A' and A If the surface E of the strop is to be used, the ends of the strops are held by the hand, so that the inclination of the strops is such as to most Conveniently present the surface to the razor. If the surface D is desired to be used, both strops m'ay be together reversed, this being permitted by the rotation of the holding device A around the end of the swiveled eye B. If the surface E' is to be used, the front strop (shown in Fig. 1) after being gras'ped by the hand and extended to the desired position may be reversed, owing to the swiveled connection between the yoke e and the eye e', without interference from the other strop, which hangs down ont of the path of rotation of the strop which is being used. If the surface D' of the under strop is to be used, the swiveled connections between the eye B and the holding device and between the yoke d and eye d' permit the surface to.
be readily presented without interference from the other strop, which falls down by gravity out of the path of rotation of the strop which is in use.
It should be noted that the rivet C in the form of my invention shown in Figs. 3 and 5 and the band C' in the modification of the device shown in Fig. 4 project into and partially close the spaces between the united backs and the ends of the hooks through which the swiveled supporting-eyes of the strops or other articles must pass. The
rivet O or band C' consequently reduces the width of the passage-ways of the hooks to a siz less than the width of the swiveled supporting-eye of the strops, and thereby perform the function of preventing the accidental detachment of the strops from the hooks in addition to the function of securing the backs of the hooks together to give strength and rigidity to the holding device.
From the foregoing description it is evident that I have produced a holding device for suspending two razor-strops from the same support, so that either surface of either strop may be readily presented in proper position for use without interference from the strop which is not then in use.
WhileI have shown and described the holding device as particularly adapted for supporting razor-strops, it is obvious that it mightadvantageonsly be used for supporting other objects, and hence I do not desire to limit the same to any specific use. p
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a plurality of hooks arranged back to back with their open ends projecting in opposite directions, of means fastening the backs of the hooks together said means proje'eting into the passages between the backs and ends of the hooks, an intermediate portion uniting said looks, and a movable supporting device swiveled to said intermediate portion, substantially as described. 4

In a device of the character described, the combination with two hooks having their backs in extended contact with each other and their open ends projecting in opposite directions and disposed in close proximity to their backs, of means for securing the backs of the hooks together said means projecting into and reducing the passages between the backs and ends of the hooks, an integral intermediate portion uniting said hooks, and a supporting-eye swiveled to said intermediate portion, substantially as described.
