` UNITED STATSPATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST J. SCHMIDT, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO DIAMOND WHIP COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION VOF ILLINOIS.
'--wein SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,351, dated September 22, -1903.
Application filed November 20, 1902. Serial No. 132,045. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.: y
Be it known that I, AUGUST J. SCHMIDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in thecountyof Cook andl State of Illinois, ha'veinvented a certain new and useful Improvement in Whips, of which the following is a specification. y
My invention relates to whips, andhas for its object to provide a new Whip with a rotating body portion connected with and so as to rotate on the handle. y
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a side View of the whip with the lash portion broken away. Fig. 2 is a View of the handle with the lash or body of the whip entirely removed. Fig. 3 is a view'of the handle with the rotating thimble removed. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section on line 4 4, Fig. 2.
Like parts are indicated by the same letter in all the iigures.
A is the central bolt or metal body, having the head B at one end, the projecting part C at the othe'nand the raised iange D. -This iiange may be placed on the body 0f the bolty in any desired manner, but so as to be firmly and securely in position.
Eis a covering or wrapper for the bolt,
. which I prefer touse, though it might not always be necessary. It may be of fiber, paper, cloth, wood, or any other suitable material.
F is the covering of the handle proper, which is of course preferably of leather and usually made in the form of a roll stitched together, as indicatedin Fig. 1.-
G isa button secured over the end of this handle and in -position to abut against the extended liange of the head B.
J is the interior thimble of any desired material, on which is secured the exterior thimble J', preferably of leather. From theinner -end of this leather shell project the leather strips J2 J2. These strips -are braided over the exterior thimble J', so that the three parts J, J', and J2 form together a rotating thimble on the lower end of-thehandle between the handle proper and the leather portion F and the flange D. The strips 'J2 J 2 are of course used to be braided into and thus secure the whip proper, K.
I wish my drawings to be taken as in a certain sense diagrammatic, for they are intended only to illustrate the general application of -my invention to the manufacture of whips without limiting meto the precise forms, arrangements, or constructions of the several parts or to the use of all of these parts or to any particular materials.
The use and operation of my invention are 6o as follows: In whips having rotatinghandles, so called, there is some danger from the wear of the parts of the handle. This wear produces a looseness which sometimes permits the two parts of the whip to separate. It is desirable that the handle itself should be firm and solid, and yet that the whip should rotate upon the handle. This may be accomplished, as indicated. It is necessary that this should be done in such a way that the 7o whip Willnot easily tear away from the handle and become separated from it. The flange D serves to hold the parts securely together, while the general appearance of all the parts is of an ordinary complete whip. It is only v when one begins to use the whip that the discovery is made that the whip revolves upon' the handle.
I claim- 1. In a whip the combination of a handle- 8o core with a handle portion separate therefrom and shorter than the core and rigidly secured thereon and a free plOjGcting part of such core beyond the handle portion, a liange on Such projecting part, a rotating thimble between the fiang'e, and 'the handle portion on the core, said thimble being made up of two sleeve-like parts secured together, the outer sleeve having a series of straps secured to that end of the thimble near the handle por.- `9o tion and a lashattached to the rotating thimble by means of such straps, so that such lash is free to rotate on lthe projecting core portion of the handle and is held in position by the flange and the inner sleeve ofthe thimble.
2. In a whip lthe combination of a` central handle-core, substantially uniform in crosssection with an encircling bandle'part'a't one end separate therefrom, but rigidly connected thereto, and shorter than the core, a flange roo at the other end, and an intermediate portion of such core, a rotating part on such intermediate portion, a leather part encircling such rotating part and with it forming a thimble, and a series of straps out from and integral with Such outer portion of the thimble and carried back over the same from the end of the handle portion, said straps braided over the thimble, and a lash secured to said Straps so that the saine is rotatable on the handle.
3. A Whip comprising a central handle-core provided at each end with a flange portion, a separate encircling handle portion shorter than said core and having one end in proximity to one iiange on the core and the other end separated from the other fiange by a free portion of said core, said handle portion rigidly connected to said core, a rotatable sleeve surrounding said free portion of the core and filling thespace between the end of the handle portion and said flange, a flexible sleeve surrounding said rotatable sleeve and rigidly connected thereto, a lash associated With the handle and connected to said flexible sleeve.
AUGUST J. SCHMIDT.
