-To all whom it may concern.-

The principal object of this invention is to provide a loading for the butt of the whip which is applicable externally of the whip body or stock instead of internally, as heretofore usually inserted, whereby the solidity of the stock is not impaired, and which buttloading, furthermore, conduces to impart enlargement and desirable shape to the end of the whip which is grasped by the hand.

The inventionconsists in the load-pieces for application exteriorly of the stock at the butt-end of the whip and to the combination therewith of the usual parts and appliances of the whip, all substantially as hereinafter fully described, and set forth in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the butt-end portion of the whip. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the whip, showing the novel combination of parts. Fig. 3 is a crosssection, on an enlarged scale, taken on the line w c, Fig. 1. Figs. Il and 5 are respectively a perspective and a longitudinal sectional view through one of the load pieces or shells.

Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.

ln the drawings, A represents the butt-end portion of the whip, comprised in which is the stock a, of rattan or wood.

B B represent the loading-pieces, of which there are preferably two, of semicircular form in cross-section and tapered 4from near the butt-end forwardly, more or less, in the proportion indicated in Fig. 2. Each loadingshell is also formed with the taper b, ex-

tending from a short distance above its lower end to such end, the same in practice being quite gradual, although shown somewhat exaggerated inthe drawings. These cross-sectionally semi-annular loading-shells, which are of lead, iron, or other suitable metal, are

placed about the rattan or other material of which the butt-end portion of the whip is composed being suitably conined thereon by glue, or the confinement may be, in addition to or substitution of the glue, secured by rivets or other mechanical fastening. These loading-shells B B beingapplied about the stockA at the butt-end, the whip is covered with the plaiting or braiding d in the usual manner, the same covering the loading-shells and serving as additional means forthe retention of the said shells in their confinement about the stocking.

'Thevmetallic ferrule f or ferrule of other material is applied to cover the shoulder or 'line of demarcation at the forward end of the load-shells.

g represents the butt-cap or butt-end ferkrule or thimble, the same having a crowding it on the rear endwise-tapered portion b of the load-pieces which are covered by the plaiting.

' The provision and application ofthe lead loading-shells B B externally of the sidings or stock at the butt portion of the whip obviates the necessity of boring or recessing such 4butt portion for the reception internally of a load-piece, as heretofore usually done, and thus the whip instead of being weakened at the handle end is not only strengthened 2.
