PATENT OFFICE.
OVERCHECKRElN-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,152, dated September 1 1903.
Application filed July 7, 1902.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH R. COOPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Span gursville, Ross county, State of Ohio, have in-. vented an Overcheckrein-Spring,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in overcheckrein-springs; audits object is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive device of this character which is ornamental, can be readily secured in proper position, and renders an overcheckrein more durable and less injurious.
. arranged Within a plate 2,10 which are secured the ends of coiled springs 3. Within this plate is also loosely mounted the central portion ofa U -shaped rod 4, the ends of which are looped, as shown at 5, and are slidably mounted upon a similar U-shaped rod 6, the
ends 7 of which are looped and slidably mounted upon rod 4. The intermediate portion of rod 6 is loosely mounted within the plate 8, which is bent upon itself and secured at opposite sides of a flexible extension 9, preferably formed of leather and having an aperture 10 therein. The springs 3 are also secured to plate 8, and it is therefore obvious that when loop ,1 is drawn away from said plate 8 springs 3 will be expanded and the looped ends 5and 7 of rods 4 and 6 will slide Serial No. 114,698. (No model.)
upon the rods on which they are mounted and serve to guide and prevent twisting of the springs. A checkrein is adapted to be secured to loop 1 in any suitable manner, and the hook on a harness-saddle is adapted to project into the aperture 10, formed within the flexible extension 9. As this extension is formed of leather orsimilar material, it is obvious that the hook of the saddle will not beinjured thereby. The device is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction and can be readily attached to ordinary checkreins.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but Ido not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spiritor sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a device of the character described, the combination with a plate bent upon itself and a flexible extension secured within the plate, of a second plate bent upon itself, a loop revolubly mounted therein, a U-shaped rod revolubly mounted in each plate, loops integral with the ends of the rods and slidably mounted upon the oppositely-disposed rod, whereby a substantially rectangular frame is formed,
and coiled springs parallel with and between the sides of the rods, the ends of the springs being secured to the inner edges of the plates. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of tw subscribing witnesses.
.- JOSEPH COOPER.
