PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS P. KRISNER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
HINGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 739,088, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed May 8, 1903. Serial No. 156,215. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, LOUIS I. KRIsNER,a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in hinges; and it consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as will be fully hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
The object ofmy invention is to construct a device whereby hinges may be suitably braced and the gate or door to which the same are secured held in horizonal position.
A further object of my invention is that the same may be applied to any ordinary strap-hinge now upon the market and that the same is simple and inexpensive. V
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, showing the same in operative position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the strap secured to the hinge, showing the supporting-rod in position. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the member supporting the other end of the supporting-rod.
In the construction of my invention 1 provide a rod 4, one end thereof being bent and secured to a loop 5, which is secured to the strap 6 of the hinge proper by rivets or the like. The other end 7 is suitably bent and supported in the loop member 8, which is secured to the post or stationary portion of the fence, and the said rod 4: isadapted to move freely within the loop member 8 by means of the supporting-washer 9, which is placed between the upper portion of the loop member 8 and the curved portion of the end 7. The lower hingelO is also provided with a loop 5, in which one end of the rod 11 is secured, and the end 12 of said rod'll is bent upon itself to form an open hook, one member thereof being adapted to engage and be held within the loop member 13 and is held from frictional contact by means of the washer 14.
By the use of my invention the strap members of the hinges proper are held in horizontal alinement with its stationary member and at the same time the gate supported by the hinges proper is held level with the remaining portion of the fence, keeping said gate at all times in horizontal alinement with the stationary post. The loops 5, if desired, may be formed integral with the hinges proper; but I find it preferable to make said loops independent and rivet them upon the hinge, for in such construction they may be applied to hinges now upon the market.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination with a hinge of the class described, of a loop secured to the doorstrap thereof near its outer end, a loop secured to a stationary post of the fence and a rod fitting into and connecting said loops for bracing, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a gate and its supporting-post of upper and lower hinges, loops secured to the respective door-strapsthereof, loops secured to the gate-post equidistant from the respective hinges, rods fitting into and connecting said loops, and washers on the ends of the rods that enter the post-loops,
whereby free movement is secured and the gate supported in horizontal alinement with the gate-post, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
LOUIS P. KRISNER.
