My invention relates to solid-piston double-acting reciprocating pumps,and aims to provide a pump simple in construction, efficient in action, capable of maintaining a constant flow of liquid from the discharge-opening, and adapted for use either as a lift or force pump, or both.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is aview, mainly in vertical central section, of one form of my pump. Fig. 2 is a similar view of a ,modifi-' cation, sh owing additional features providing for increased capacity and the pump adapted for use as a force-pump. Fig. 3 is a horizon tal cross-section on the line III III of Fig. 2.
The pump comprises a main outer casing or body 1', secured on a suitable base 2, through which passes the main inlet-pipe 3, controlled by a valve 4. Said casing is closed at the top by a cap or head 5, through which passes the connecting-rod 6, pivotally so cured to a handle 7 orother actuating means. The casing 1 contains two cylinders or piston-chambers 8 ,9, arranged end to end and separated from each other by a transverse partition or center head 10. Within said chambers 8 9 are pistons 11 12, mounted on a common piston-rod 13, which passes through the center head 10. Through said center head and connecting said chambers extend a longitudinal inlet-passage 14 and a longitudinal outlet-passage 15. The inlet-passage 14 is connected about midway with a supplyport 16, formed in the casing l and extending longitudinally to the Water-space below the piston 11, into which space the liquid enters through the valve 4. From the passage 15 an outlet 17 leads to a spout, pipe, or other means of discharge.
Within the inlet=passage 14 are formed seats 18 19, adapted to receive alternately the heads'of a double-pistonvalve 20 or other formof valve adapted to reciprocate in said passage 14. A curved port 21, formed in the head 10, leads from a point in said passage 14 immediately above seat 18 into the upper cylinder 9, and a similar port 22 leads from a point in said passage immediately below seat 19 into the lower cylinder 8.
Within the outlet-passage 15 are formed seats 23 24 to receive alternately aireciproeating valve 25, which maybe of any preferred form adapted to alternately open and close the ends of passage 15.
The operation of thisform of the pump is as follows: When the pistons 11 12 rise, as they are supposed to be doing in Fig. 1, the liquid contained in cylinder 8 above piston 11 lifts the valve 25 and the liquid passes out to its lower position on seat 24 in passage 15,
allowing the liquid in cylinder 9 to pass out at the discharge. Valve 20 in passage 14 is also forced to its lowest position, closing port 21 and opening port 22. The liquid in cylin der 8 below piston 11 is forced by the pressure of said piston upward through port 16, passage l4, and port 22 into the space in said lower cylinder above piston 11, ready for the next upward stroke. It will thus be seen that each piston acts alternately by suction and by pressure and that by their combined action a continuous discharge at the outlet is eifected. I
In the modification shown in Figs. 2 and 3 provision is made for increasing the capacity of the pump by the addition of longitudinal induction-ports 2627 exterior to the cylin ders, connected with the inlet pipe 3 or other source of supply, and eduction-ports 28 29 exterior to the cylinders and connected with the discharge-pipe 30. Openings provided with inlet check-valves 31 32 of any preferred type connect the outer ends of ports 26 27 with the outer ends of the cylinders, and similar openings provided with valves 33 34 opening outwardly connect the outer ends of the cylinders with the discharge-ports 28 29. An outlet check-valve 35 is also provided at the point where the passage 15, connecting the upper and lower cylinders, opens into discharge-pipe 30. In this form of the pump the operation is the same as heretofore described, but with the addition that on the upward or inward stroke of the pistons liquid is drawn into cylinder Sthrough valve 32 and forced out of cylinder 9 through valve 33 into the discharge, and on the down or outward (with reference to an engine, if used) stroke liquid is drawn into cylinder 9 through valve 31 and forced out of cylinder 8 through valve 34; into the discharge. The check-valve 35 prevents the return of any liquid from the dischargepipe into passage 15 while the pump is stationary or at any other time.
The modified form described provides for the constant movement of the liquid either by suction or pressure upon each side of each of the pistons during the entire operation of the pump and a discharge of liquid effected by each piston with each stroke in either direction, thus resulting in a pump of great capacity and power.
It is obvious that either form of my pump may be adapted for use either as a lift or force pump, as may he desired.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a pump, the combination of two cylinders arranged tandem, pistons therein, a
rod on which said pistons are mounted, a
transverse center head disposed between said cylinders, an inlet-passage extending through said center head and connecting said cylinders, induction-ports in said center head leading from said passage into said cylinders, a double-piston valve adapted to reciprocate in said passage, and having heads adapted to close the ends of said passage and open and close alternately said induction-ports, a supply-port opening into said passage, between said valve-heads, and a valve-controlled outlet from each of said cylinders through said center head, substantially as set forth.
2. In a pump, the combination of two cylinders in line, pistons therein, a piston-rod common to said cylinders, an inlet-passage extending through said center head, induction-ports in said center head leading from said passage to said cylinders, a double-piston valve adapted to reciprocate in said passage, and having heads adapted to close the ends of said passage and open and close alternately said induction-ports, a supply-port opening into said passage between said valveheads, induction-ports exterior to the cylinders leading from the main supply-entrance to the outer end of each cylinder, eductionports exterior to the cylinders leading from the outer end of each cylinder to the discharge, and valves controlling the openings between said exterior ports and cylinders, substantially as set forth.
