Be it known that LHENRY B.ARNOLD,aciti- Zen of the United States, residing at Midland, in the county of Midland and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Double-Acting Cylinder-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to double-acting cylinder-pumps, my purpose being to organize a pump of this type insuch a manner that it shall be capable of continuous operation and of furnishing a continuous stream of water even after a part of its mechanism is disabled.
It is another objectof my invention to provide a pump which can be operated with the least possible expenditure of labor, the cylinders of which shall at all times be completely filled with waterboth above and belowthesolid plunger or piston-head in the main cylinder and in the auxiliary cylinder or eduction and induction chambers and to reduce the area of the check-valves which control the inflow and outflow to and from the' latter, whereby the pressure upon said checks will be largely reduced,enablin g them to be unseated or opened with less effort and diminishing the liability of their sticking or refusing to openunless a largely-increased pressure is brought to bear. It is my aim also to provide a double-acting cylindenpump the reciprocating plunger or piston of which will be operated by a substantially uniform force at every point of both its upward and downward movements, the power required for its practical operation being materially reduced as compared with other pumps of the same class and equal capacity. I provide,moreover, a pump which will deliver a greater volume of water in a given time and with less expenditure of motive power than other pumps of the same type and equal di mensions of cylinders.
My invention also comprises other novel and useful features, and I will now proceed to explain its construction and operation, the novel points being afterward particularly pointed out and defined in the claims at the end of this specification.
For the purposes of the following description reference will be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a double-acting cylinder pump constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section upon the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section taken on the line 3 3 in said Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the same upon the line 4 4 in Fig. 2.
The reference-numeral 1 in said drawings indicates the main or body portion of the pump, which is of cylindioal form and of any required dimensions. It consists of an interior or main cylinder 2, having at its top an outlet-valve casing 2 of greater diameter provided with a stop-plate 3' and communicating with the interior of the cylinder 2. by means of the outlet 4 therefor. The lower end of the cylinder is formed with an inlet 5 and a suitable distance above the same with a stop-plate 6, which is arranged in such a manner as to form the passages 7, the central portion thereof constituting a valve-stop.
The reference-numeral 3 denotes the exterior cylinder concentric with the main cylinder, but of a much greater diameter, so that the annular space between the two cylinders is divided into four quadrantal spaces or eduction and induction chambers 4 4t and 5 5, respectively, of equal capacity. These chambers are separated from each other by partitions 6, which lie substantially in line with the radii of the two cylinders.
The interior or main cylinder 2 is provided with a solid plunger or piston-head 7, reciprocated therein by a piston-rod 8, which can be operated by any motive power preferred or by hand. The valve-casing 2 has arranged therein a check valve 9, provided with a sleeve 9 and a centrally-arranged opening to permit of the same being mounted upon the piston-rod 8, the vertical movement of the valve 9 being limited by means of the stop 3'. The lower end of the cylinder 2 has suitably arranged therein a globular check-valve 10, the vertical movement thereof being limited by means of stop-plate 6. The inner cylinder 2 is also provided with two openings 12 at one end and at the other end with two openings 13, the latter being upon opposite sides of the cylinder, while the ports or openings 12 are also formed in the opposite sides of the inner cylinder, but alternating with the openings 13. The openings 12 at the lower end of the inner cylinder open into the outer or eduction chambers 4 4, while the alternating openings 13 at the upper end of the inner cylinder 2 give communication between the induction-chambers 5 5 and the main cylinder 2. The eduction water-chambers 4 4 are provided at their upper ends with checkvalves 14, retained in position by means of the yokes 14, and the lower ends of the two chambers 5 5 have each a similar valve 15, retained in position by means of the yokes 15. The valves 14 14 are arranged upon the exterior of the chambers 4 4 and both open by an inner pressure to give exit from said chambers, while the valves 15 15 are upon the interior of the chambers 5 5 and are closed by interior pressure. The port 4, controlled by the top check-valve 9 of the valve-casing 2, and those controlled by the valves 14 14 have communication with a service or other pipe 16 by means of a suitable outlet.
The operation of the invention is as follows: When the plunger or piston-head 7 moves up in the interior cylinder 2, the checkvalves 14 14 and 15 15 are all closed and the water above said piston-head is discharged through the port controlled by the checkvalve 9 at the upper end of the main cylinder 2, the cylinder being filled below said piston by water drawn in through the port controlled by the check-valve 10. It will be understood, of course, that the closing of the valves 15 cuts off or prevents escape of water from the inner cylinder through the openings 13, which lead into the two chambers 5 5. Upon the downstroke of the plunger or piston-head the check-valve 10 at the lower end of the inner cylinder closes and the valves 14 14 and 15 all open. The water below the piston-head in the central cylinder 2 flows through the openings 12 12 at the lower end of said cylinder 2 into the two opposite eduction-chambers 4 4, whence it escapes by way of the ports controlled by the check-valves 14 14. At the same time the check-valves 15 15 open and water entering the inductionchamber 5 5 flows through the openings 13 into the main cylinder 2, filling the space above the piston-head 7 in readiness for the upward stroke.
I am also able to reduce the size of the check-valves, and thereby to considerably diminish the pressure on said valves by the superincumbent volume of water, which sometimes makes it a difficult matter to unseat said valves, and is very liable to cause them to adhere to their seats if the pump is out of use for a short period.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
A double-acting cylindenpump, consisting of an inner cylinder provided at its bottom with an inlet and at its top with an outlet, at stop-plate arranged in said cylindera suitable distance above said inlet, a valve interposed between said stop-plate and inlet, an outletvalve chamber mounted upon the top of said cylinder, a valve arranged in said casing and adapted to close the outlet of said cylinder, a piston mounted in said inner cylinder, 3, rod connected thereto and extending upwardly freely through said outlet-valve, a series of four quadrant-a1 chambers surrounding said cylinder and extending above the same and forming a pair of oppositely-arranged educ tion and a pair of oppositely-arranged induction chambers, the upper ends of the induction-chambers communicating by valveless openings with the interior of said cylinder, the lower end of the said eduction-chambers communicating by Valveless openings with the interior of said cylinder, the respective openings being disposed in alternation in the inner cylinder near its opposite-ends, a checkvalve arranged at the lower end of each of the induction-chambers, yokes mounted in the lower end of said induction-chambers for retaining said valves in position, a checkvalve mounted upon the top of each of said ed uct-ion-chambers, yokes mounted upon the-- top of the eduction-chambers for retaining said valves in position, and a service-pipe connected to the said chambers and in com-- munication with said outlet-valve casing and the eduction-chambers, substantially as here in shown and described.
