OF ONE-HALF TO FAY N. LONGWELL, OF NORTH PLAINFIELD, NEW
JERSEY.
TROUSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Lettersratent No. 738,6?7, dated september 8, 1903.
Application filed June 6, 1903. Serial No. 16 0,388. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LEANDER W. HAMMOND, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at North Plainfield. in the county of Somerset and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trousers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to trousers; and the objecto'f the same is to construct a trousersleg in such a manner that it will yield and draw up when one sits down and not stick to the calves of the legs and stretch and bag at the knees.
The simple and novel construction employed by me in carrying out my invention is fully described and claimed in this speciication and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a trousers-leg on a bended leg. Fig. 2 is` an elevation of a trousers-leg with my invention thereon. Fig.
3 is a detail of the knee-lining. Fig. f1 is a detail of bottom lining. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of a trousersdeg turned inside out. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6, Fig. 2. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7'` 7, Fig. 2.
The numeral ldesignates a trousers-leg formed of a front breadth 2 and a rear breadth 3, united at the edges by seams 4. Located just opposite the knee'portion of the trousers-leg 1 is an antifriction-lining 5 of haircloth` or satin, which extends from seam to seam of the legi and has anotch 6, formed in the upper edge thereof, which has straight downwardly-inclined sides 7 running from the seams 4 to the center of the front breadth 2. The bottom 8 may also be notched, but I have shown it cut square. Thenotch Genables the leg to coliform morenearly to the shape of` theknee and prevents drawing and wrinkling of the lining 5.
Mounted in the back of the leg 1 and eX- tending from the bottom 1"to`about eight inches or afoot upwardly is an antifrictionlining 9,`firmly secured at its edges to the rear `breadth 3 and having a notch 10 in the top thereof similar to the notch 6.
Both legs 1 of a pair of trousers are supplied with the knee and bottom linings 5 and 9. When sitting down with a pair of trousers on provided with antifriction- linings 5 and 9, the rear of the bottoms of the legs will draw in against the calves of the legs, as is usual, but the lining 9 will not stick to the calf, but will yield and permit the bottom of the trousers-leg 1 to drawnp and make room for the knee. The lining 5 will also yield and assist in the operation. The notches 6 and 10 enable the upper edges of the linings 5. and 9 to pull straight and not pucker, thereby assisting in the operation.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a trousers-leg of an antifriction-linin g mounted within the knee portion of said leg and firmly secured in the front portion thereof, and an antifriction-lining mounted within the rear bottom portion of said leg and firmly secured thereto, said linings being designed to permit the trousersleg to yield and draw up when the wearer bends his knee, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a trousers-leg, of an antifriction-lining located within the knee portion of said trousers-leg and having a notch formed in the upper edge thereof, the sides of which notch extend from the side seams 4of the leg to the center of the front breadtlrthereof, and an antifriction-lining located within the rear of the bottom portion of said leg and firmly secured thereto, substantially as described'.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set .my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- DGSSQS.
' LEANDER w. HAMMOND.
