ELI WHITE AND WILLIAM SHILVOOK, OF NEW. YORK, N. Y.
Laim Patent No. 73,856, me January as, 186s.
IMPROVEMENT vIN BUN GS.
To' ALL WHoM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, ELI WHITE and WILLIAM SnILvocK, of the city, county, ,and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Bushing for Bong-Holes for Barrels, libc.; and we do `hereby declare that the following'is a full, clear, and exact description tliereoi`,')vhich will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention relates' to a bushing for the bung-holes of barrels, casks, 850.', which bushing is of such form and construction that when placed Within the bung-hole, it can be therein expanded or opened, so as to completely'line 'its edge or circumference, and at the same time fastenedl in place.- In the acoompapying plate of drawings my improved bushing is illustrated- Figure 1 being a plan view ot' the outside end to the bushing.
Figure .2 a plan View ofthe inside, and
Figure 3 a side view of the bushing, with a portion of a barrel, at its bung-hole, m vertical section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A, in the drawings, represents our improved bushing. The body portion, B, to this bushinggis made of sheet metal, so as to be expansible, and of a. cylindrical or tubular shape, with alliange, C, at one end. The l l body B, around its outside, at its inner end, E, and also at the under side to the flange, is provided With a series of sharp prongs or teeth, D, suitable for penetrating the wood when force is properly applied to the bushing therefor. The body portion of the bushing, when made, is left of a conical or tapering shape, with its inner end smaller in diameter than its outer, so that the prongs at such inner end will not offer the least interference to the insertion of the bushing Within the bung-hole, when, having driven the prongs to the outside of the barrel, by then inserting, with the hollow bushing, a suitable tapering plug, and driving it sufficiently, the prongs to the body ofthe bushing can be then driven into the edge of the hole, thus fastening the bushing in place, forming a lining to hole. The flange to the bushing may be dispensedwith, but we deem it best to use it. i i We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A bushing for the bung-holes of barrels, tc., constructed with the body B, flange C, and prongs D, substantially as described.
Theabove specification of our invention-signed by us, this 28th day of October, 1867.
