Lette/rs Patent No. 99,370, dated February 1, 187
HAMMER FOR PACKING TOBACCO.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent: and part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN REID SUTTON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rammers for Packing Tobacco; and l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciii- 4tion in conjunction therewith, of a sliding pin or punch,
for forcing down into the tobaccoto make a hole for the stem of a pipe, in such relation to the recess formed by the said projection, that when the rammer is withdrawn, and before the paper is withdrawn, a smokingpipe can be conveniently packed in the paper with the tobacco.
Figure l represents a side elevation of my improved rammel', and
Figure 2 represents an elevation of the same, and a sectional elevation of the packing-cases with which it is used, showing the tobacco packed therein.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A and B are the moulds or packing-cases commonly used for packing the tobacco into the small papers in which it is sold to consumers, and
G represents the paper for the reception of the t0- bacco, and which is first folded around the lower part of the funnel-mouthed case B, and inserted in the case A, to be held in a vertical position for the reception of the tobacco placed in the funnel-mouthed case B, and forced down to the top of A by the rammer, after which the rammer and the case B are withdrawn, leaving the paper in case A to be folded at the top and withdrawn. v
My invention consists in the application, to the rammer D, of the projection E, and the sliding punch F, for forming a space in the top of the tobacco for the bowl of a pipe, and a hole therefrom to the bottomfor the stem, to enable lme to pack a' smoking-pipe in the paper with the tobacco, with facility, and to fold the paper over it, and make a neat package of the same size as those without the pipes.
In operation, the rammer is first forced down as far as required. to pack the tobacco, with the punch remaining up, then the punch is forced down.
The projection E may be formed on the end of the rammer in any suitable way, and the punch F is preferablyr arranged to rise up through a hole in the square part of the rammer, and to connect with a sleeve, G, capable of sliding up and down ou the shank. Any other approved arrangement thereof may, however,
A be made.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with the rammer D, of the projection E and punch F, arranged for operation substantially as specified'.
2. The combination of the rammer, punch, and
- sleeve, all substantially as specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me, this 21st day of December, 1869.
