ADDISON 0,' FLETCHER, OF NEW YORK. N. Y.
lurltovrnnur IN BALB-Pancreas,
@Ligt tlgehtlr refutar tu in ttm tettas patent mit mating gaat nt tige tzt-me.
To ALL WHoM 1r MAY conocen;
13e it known that I, ADDISON C. FLETCHER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement on Bale-Fastoners, applicable also to securing other packages, of which the following is a full7 clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part ol' this specification, and in which- Figure 1 represents a plan, face, `or iat View of a bale-fastener, constructed according to my improvement, and with a baling-hoop on its end sections applied thereto.
Figure 2, a longitudinal section ofthe same. v s
Figure 3, a plan or face View ofthe plate of which the fastener'is composed detached, and
Figure 4, a longitudinal section of portion of the fastener-plato, slightly modified in its construction to adapt it to holding one end of the baling-hoop without the aid of a separate cross-loel1ing piu.
Like letters indicato like parts in both igures.
The nature ot' my invention consists ina peculiarly-constructed slotted plate, through which one or'both ends of the baling-hoop or wire are slipped a second time, or doubled and bridged formation to the plate, over one or more of certain ofthe slots, throughwhich a pin or nail is passed to bind or lock the doubled ends ofthe hoop or Wire between the end or ends ofthe plate and sl0t, .over the edge or edges of which the hoop or wire is doubled. l
Referring to the accompanying drawing, A is a metallic plate constructed with a slot or opening, a, in it, preferably of a width corresponding to the width, or thereabouts, of the helinghoop or wire, hoopiron being preferred for baling cotton, and wire, .it may be, for` baling hay, the shape ormaterial of which the baling-tie is formed, varying with the description of the goods to be baled, and other circunrstances.` It -will suffice here, however, to refer to the tie asfmade of hoop-iron. B is the one end of the tie, and C the other. The one of these ends may be secured, in any suitable manner, to the plate A, between its end and the opening a; thus it may be slipped through a second time, that is', doubled or twisted baeli or over the one edge ofthe opening a, and be locked as hereinafter described, or as represented in g. 4; its doubled end passed underneath the plate through a second slot, b, that may or may not be bridged or arched, as hereinafter referred to. Supposing, however, both ends of the `Daling-hoop to be locked, then, in addition to two cross-slots or openings I) in the plate, between the opening t and ends of the plate, I form bridges or arches c, on -the outer surface thereof, on the opposite sides or edges of the doubled portions ot' the heling-hoop, so that by simply passing a nail or pin, or `nails or pins, D, through the bridges or arches C, as represented in figs. 1 and 2, the doubled ends of `the baling-hoop are lsprung at their crossing over the slots In, and securely held or locked, the springing ofthe hoopiron or wire serving to bea-r the nails or pins against the bridges C, and hold them in place, but so that they muy be removed on tapping them with the hammer, when it is desired tol-unbale.
A bale-fastener thus` constructed is as simple as it is eii'ieient.` The device, it is obvious, may be applied as a fastener to packages of vario-us descriptionsother than bales.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bale-fastener composed of a plate, A, provided'with an opening, a, and a slot or slots, b, one or both of .the latter having arches c at their sides, for use in connection with a pin or nail, or pins or nails, D, to secure the bent or doubled end or ends of the baling-hoops or wires. substantially as specified.
