To all whom it'nmyooncern:
Be it known that I, ZAOHARIAH FLEMING JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Scottsville, in the county of Albemarle and State of Virginia, have invented certain newIand useful improvements in Bottles or other Vessels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved bottle or other vessel of that class in which it is necessary to fracture a portion of the neck when opening the bottle, and thereby prevent the bottle from being refilled without being detected; and it consists in the peculiar constrnction and combination of devices hereinafter fully described and claimed.
One object of my invention is to eEect improvements in the construction of the bottle or vessel neck, whereby when the same is fractured prior to the removal of the stopper the fracture will lie within and below the lip which forms the edge of the neck and out of the way, so that the fracture will not render the bottle unsightly and will not be likely to cut the hands or the mouth of the user, hence adapting such a bottle to be drank from without danger of cutting the mouth of the drinker.
A'further object of my invention is to effect improvements in the construction of the bottle or other vessel neck, whereby the same is prevented from being injured by the pressure incident to the corking of the bottle, and whereby the bottle may be safely handled without the exercise of undue care.
A further object of my invention is to combine with my improved bottle or other vessel neck an improved construction of stopper,
which is adapted to be fractured without in-.
jury to the neck of the bottle or vessel and to be removed therefrom in parts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a bottle neck and stopper constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 isasimilar view showing the sealing-stopper removed and the inner cap-lip fractured. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the plane indicated by the line a a of Fig. 1, and Fig. 1 is a sectional view showing a modified form of the sealing-stopper.
In the embodiment of my invention I construct the neck 1 of the bottle or vessel with an outer lip 2 and with an inner cap-lip 3, which is spaced therefrom by an annular groove 4. As here shown, the inner cap-lip projects beyond the outer permanent lip; but this may be modified within the scope of my invention, and I do not desire to limit myself in this particular. The inner cap-lip has its base connected to the neck of the vessel by a comparatively thin, and hence frangible, web 5. A circumferential interior annular groove 6 is made in the neck of the vessel directly below the base of the inner cap-lip, which groove undercuts the latter, so that the inner cap-lip overhangs the said groove. The neck'l is further provided at a suitable point near its mouth with an exterior reinforce swell or bead 7, which greatly strenthens the neck and mouth of the vessel and protects the same against injury when the vessel is being corked, handled, and transported. The interior diameter of the inner cap lip is greater than the diameter of the bore 8 of the neck in which the stopper 9 is placed. I also provide a sealing-stopper 10. The said sealing-stopper has its lower portion 11 of suitable size to closely fit the bore of the neck below the groove 5 and its upper portion or head enlarged, as at 12, to fit in the enlarged diametric bore formed by the inner cap-lip 3. construction of the sealing-stopper and of the neck of the bottle or vessel causes the head of the sealing-stopper to overhang the lower side of the groove 6, whereby ashoulder 13 is formed, which may be engaged by the head of the sealing stopper when the latter is forced downwardly in the bore of the neck. The sealing-stopper is provided with a circumferential groove 14 at the base of its onlarged head 12, which groove when the sealing-stopper is in position in the neck of the vessel registers with the groove 6. Prior to thus placing the sealing-stopper in the neck a sealing-spring-one or more--15 which in practice is preferably a piece of straight steel or other spring wire of suitable length, is placed in the groove 6, and when the sealingstopper is placed in the neck of the bottle the It will be understood that this said sealing spring or key also engages the groove 14 of the sealing-stopper, as will be understood, and hence effectually locks the sealing-stopper in the bore of the neck.
It will be understood from the foregoing that before the sealing-stopper can be drawn from the vessel the inner cap-lip 8 must be broken from the latter and that the fracture will occur in the web 5, which is below the permanent outer lip 2 of the bottle or other vessel, so that the latter will not be rendered unsightly by the fracture nor will the jagged edges resulting from the fracture be where they can cut the hands or mouth of the user. Such a bottle, even when the inner cap-lip has been thus broken out, is adapted for use as a table-bottle, and it is not rendered unsightly by the fracture. Moreover, the neck of my improved bottle may be very short, so that small whisky and other bottles, which are used as pocket-bottles, may be formed in accordance with my invention.
It will be understood that the inner stopper 9 may within the scope of my invention be dispensed with, and I do not limit myself in this particular.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings I illustrate a modified form of the sealing-stopper, in which the latter is provided in its upper portion with a cavity 16, the inner or lower end of which is somewhat above the groove 14=and is of such diameter as to form a thin, and hence frangible, neck 18 at the inner side of the groove. When a bottle or vessel of my improved construction is provided with this form of stopper, the latter may be removed by placing a suitable instrument, such as a nail, in the cavity 16 and striking downwardly therein to cause the frangible neck 18 of the stopper to be broken, whereupon by inverting the bottle the head of the stopper will drop out, and the sealing spring or key and the inner end of the stopper may be then removed.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-
1. A vessel-neck having an outer lip, an inner cap-lip spaced therefrom and an interior annular circumferential groove undercutting the inner lip and that portion of the neck which connects the base of the inner lip thereto, substantially as described.
2. A vessel-neck having an outer lip, an inner cap-lip spaced therefrom, a frangible web forming a connection between the inner cap-lip and the neck, and an interior annular circumferential groove undercutting said inner cap-lip and frangible web, substantially as described. I
3. A vessel-neck having an outer lip, an inner cap-lip spaced therefrom and connected thereto by a frangible web, and an interior annular circumferential groove undercutting said inner lip and frangible web, the interior diameter of the inner cap-lip being greater than the bore of the neck, whei'eby the lowerside of the groove forms a shoulder, in combination with a frangible stopper adapted to fitthe bore and having a head of enlarged diameter to fit the bore of theinner lip, said stopper being further provided with an annular groove to register with that in the neck, and a sealing-key to engage said grooves for the purpose set forth, substantially as described. p,
4. In combination with a vesse'l-neck'haw ing a bore of unequal diameters, a stopper correspondingly shaped having an overhanging portion in the larger bore of the neck, and a frangible neck below said overhanging portion for the purpose set forth, substantially as described.
