CHIMNEY-COWL.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,493, dated August 25, 1903.

Application filed January 2, 1903.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS B. SAMUEL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hiawatha, in thecounty of Brown and State of- Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Cowls, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in chimney-cowls; and it consists in aflue havin g a revoluble hood adapted to discharge the smoke issuing from the chimney in the same direction in which the wind is blowing and an adjustable base whereby the flue may be applied to chimneys of diiferent size.

The invention further consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, and in order that it may be fully understood reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of my improved chimney-cowl applied to a chimney. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View of the same taken on line' II II of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a portion of the base taken on line III III of Fig. 2. In constructing my invention I employ an adjustable base 1, comprising two sections 2, having overlapping inner ends and depending marginal flanges 3,extending downwardly on three sides, as shown in Fig. 2. Said sections are provided at their inner top portions with upwardly-extending semicircular flanges 4, having overlapping inner ends and provided with internally-threaded bosses 5, engaged by a transverse rod 6, provided near its opposite portions with right and left threads 7 to engage the threads in the bosses for the purpose of adjusting sections 2 to fit chimneys of different size. Sections 2 are also providedwith adjustable clamping-plates 8, adapted to be drawn in contact with the sides of the chimney by transverse rods 9, extending through slotted extensions 10, formed on the opposite ends of the clamping-plate, to permit lateral movement of rods 9 when sections 2 are adjusted longitudinally. Rods 9 are rotatably secured in ears 3 at the corners of the base by nuts 11 and rectangular heads 11 and are also provided with oppositely-disposed right and left threads 12, en-

gaged by taps 13, slidably arranged in the slotted extensions 10 and provided with oppositely-disposed flanges 14, which retain them in position and draw plates 8 together or push them apart when the rods are rotated, and in order to permit this lateral movement of said plates flanges 3 are provided with slots 15, in which the slotted extensions are adapted to operate. Rods 9 are protected from the weather by beads 3, formed upon the outer end portions of flanges 3. The opposite ends of rod 6 extend a suitable distance beyond flanges 4 to receive a flue 16, which is secured upon the base by said rod, and a tap 17 and rectangular head 17 on the opposite ends of said rod, and by means of which it is rotated to obtain longitudinal adjustment of the base. Flue '16 is provided near its opposite ends with transverse bars 18, in which is rotatably mounted a spindle 19, provided at its lower end with taps and washers 2O 20, arranged on opposite sides of its lower bearing to prevent vertical movement of the spindle, which is bent at its upper end 21 to receive a hood 22, provided near its lower end with a transverse bar 23 to further secure it to the spindle. The open mouth of said hood is held in the direction in which the wind is blowing by a vane 24, secured at its upper portion, and consequently the smoke is prevented from being blown down into the chimney.

By providing the flue with the above-described adjustable base it is apparent that it may be arranged to fit different size chimneys, and when applied to a chimney-top may be so tightly clamped thereon as to avoid the necessity of guide or stay wires.

From the above description it is apparent that I have produced a chimney-cowl which is simple in construction and thoroughly effective for the purpose intended.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- 1. In a deviceof the character described, a base portion provided with threaded rods journaled therein and oppositelydisposed clamping-plates on said rods adapted to be adjusted toward or from each other independently of the base.

2. In a device of the character described,

the combination with a suitable base portion, of oppositely-disposed clamping-plates therein and rods provided with right and left hand threads passing through said plates and journaled in the base.

3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base portion having depending marginal flanges, of clampingplates therein, and rods, provided with right and left hand threads, journaled in opposite flanges and passing through the ends of the clamping-plates.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base portion having depending marginal flanges, of slotted clamping-plates therein disposed parallel to two opposite flanges, rods, provided with right and left hand threads, journaled in said opposite flanges and passing through the slots in the clamping-plates, and flanged taps on said rods slidably disposed in the slots of the clamping-plates 5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base portion comprising two sections, means for adjusting said sections toward or from each other, oppositelydisposed clam ping-plates within the base and means for adjusting said clamping-plates toward or from each other independently of the base.

6. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base portion comprising two overlapping sections, depending flanges on the free edges of said sections, means for adjusting the sections, slotted clampingplates within the base arranged perpendicular to the overlapping edges of the sections, slots in the opposite end flanges of the two sections, threaded rods in line with said slots and journaled in lugs projecting from said end flanges, and flanged taps upon said rod slidably disposed within the slots of the clamping-plates.

7. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base portion comprising two sections, erect arc-shaped portions on the inner ends of said sections, a suitable flue upon the base surrounding the arc-shaped portions, and a threaded rod passing through said arc-shaped portions and journaled in the flue.

8. In a device of the character described, the combination of a base portion comprising two overlapping sections, overlapping arcshaped portions arising from the overlapping ends of said sections, a detachable flue upon the base surrounding the arc-shaped portions, and a threaded rod passing through said arcshaped portions and journaled in the flue.
