PATENT OFFICE.

- ELASTIC-FLUID TURBINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 737,121, dated August 25, 1 903.
Application filed May '7, 1902. Serial No. 106,293. (No model.) l I To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, TORE G. E. LINDMARK, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Stockholm, Sweden, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Elastic-.
In the accompanying drawings, Figured is a vertical section of my reversible steam-tn rbine, its casing, andconnections. Figs. 2 and 3 are partial cross-sections, enlarged, on the lines, respectively, a, a. and b bfof Fig. 1. Fig. 4 shows on theleft-hand side the interior face of the left-hand portion of the easing with the wheel removed, the View being in the direction of'the arrow in Fig. 1, and on the right-hand side a half-section on the line w w of Fig. 1. some of the wheel-buckets on theline 'y y of Fig. 6. Fig. 6 is a section of said buckets on the line ,2 z of Fig. 5.
Similar characters of reference indicate'like parts.
l'is a steam-turbine wheel mountedupon the shaft 2, which shaft is journaledwithin the casing 3. parts, bolted together in any suitable way at the meeting fianges'and is'supported by the standard 4. On shaft 2 is any suitable coupling 5 for transmission of power. The
wheel-body is solid and has on its peripheryets, it will be' evident that a jet directed into the recesses of tier 6 will actuate the wheel in the opposite direction" to that in which a jet directed into the recesses of tier 7 would actuate it.
I will now describe the construction whereby the fiuid is directed into either tier 6 or 7, as desired.
8 is the main steam-pipe from any source Fig. 5 is a section of Said casing is made in two of supply, which connects with two branch pipes 9 and 10. Pipes 9 and 10, respectively, communicate with annular chambers 11 and 12 in the casing 3. Seated in pipe 9 is apivoted valve 13 and in pipe 10 a similar valve 14. Said valves are turned toopen or close them by levers 15 and 16. The lever 15 on lvalve 13 terminates in a handle 17. The end of lever 16 on valve 14 is pivoted to a link 18,
which at its opposite extremity is pivoted to lever. 15. The valves 13 and 14 are to be so .set that when valve 13 is opened valve 14 is closed, and vice versa. Hence by meansof the handle 17 one valve can be opened and the other closed, depending upon the move' ment of said 'handle in one or the other-direction, and in this way steam maybe ad- 'mitted into annular chamber 11 or annular chamber 12 at the will of the operator. Around the inner wall19 of annular chamber 11 are arranged a number of nozzles 20,
one of which is shown in cross-section in Fig. 2. These nozzles are preferably of the wellknown De Laval type-that is, approximately conical-with their larger openings placed to deliver jets tangentially to the wheel-buckets. The several jets from these nozzles 20 are directed upon the inner tier of buckets 7.
"After impinging on said buckets, and so setting'the wheel in rotation, the jets pass be tween said buckets to, the annular chamber 21 in the opposite side of the casing 23, and so 'to the branch pipe 22, which communicates with the main eXhaust=pipe 23. Similarly arranged in the inner wall 24: of chamber 12 are nozzles 25, Fig. 3, like nozzles 20, but turned in the opposite direction. These, however, deliver their jets upon the other tier of buckets 6, and after impact upon the concavities in said buckets, thus setting the wheel in rotation in direction opposite to that in which it is impelled by the jets from nozzles 20, said jets pass between the buckets to the annular chamber 26 in the opposite side of easing 3, and so to the branch pipe 27 ,which communicates with the exhaust-pipe 23..-
The operation of the entire device will now readily be followed: If the handle17 is operated to open valve 13, and hence simultaneously to close valve 14, steam will pass by pipe 9, chamber 11, nozzles 20, and buckets 7 to chamber 21, pipe 22, and main exhaust 23, and the wheel 1 will be set in rotation. in order to reverse the direction of revolution, thehandle 17 is moved to shut the valve 13 and open the valve 14. Then the steam proceeds by way of pipe to chamber 12, nozzles 25, buckets 6, chamber-26 to branch pipe 27 and main exhaust 23. Hence by simply moving the handle 17 in one direction or the other the direction of rotation of the Wheel 1 is controlled.
I claim- 1. The combination with the casing and its inlet and exhaust passages, of the turbinewheel comprising a body and circumferential buckets detachably secured to the periphery of the body and having oppositely-facing recesses.
2. A turbine-wheel comprising the body portion and circumferential buckets provided with shanks secured to the periphery of said body and having oppositely-facing recesses.
3. A turbine-wheel comprising the body having peripheral recesses, and circumferential buckets provided with shanks fitting in said recesses and having oppositely-facing recesses.
4. A turbine-wheel bucket having the shank c and recesses cl, e therein.
5. In combination with a turbine-Wheel 1 and buckets forming circumferential tiers 6, 70f recesses thereon, the said recesses facing in opposite directions, of the casing 3 having annular inlet- chambers 11 and 12 on opposite sides of said wheel, sets of nozzles and disposed in the Walls of said chambers and constructed to deliver fluid respectively to each of said tiers, valves 13 and 14: for controlling the admission of working fluid to said sets of nozzles, and means for simultaneously opening one of said valves and closing the other.
6. A turbine-wheel having a body portion TORE G. E. LINDMARK.
