Description

No. 736,974. v PATENTBD AUG. 25, 1903. A. w. KAVEL.
VEHICLE TOP.
APPLIOATIONIIL'ED JULY 1B. 190:.
N0 MODEL.
Patented August 25, 1903.
I PATENT OFFICE.
AUGUST WVM. KAVEL, OF SHEBOYGAN, WISCONSIN.
VEHICLE-TO P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 73 6,9741, dated August 25, 1903. Application filed July 16, 1903. derial No. 165,747. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST WM. KAVEL, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle- Tops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ference to the accompanying drawings and subsequently claimed.
Figure 1 of the drawings represents apartlysectional side elevation of mechanism in accordance with my invention applied to a stretcher andbow of a folding vehicle-top; Fig. 2, a horizontal section View indicated by line 2 2 in the first figure, and Fig. 3 a perspective view of said invention.
Referring by letter to the drawings, A indicates a stretcher, and B the middle bow of a vehicle-top, this bow being vertical when raised. Bolted or otherwise fastened on a section of the stretcher is a clip 0, and a link D connects the clip with one end of a lever E, the other end of the lever being inward olfset at a right angle to the remainder. The offset end of the lever E has its bearing in a clip F, bolted orotherwise fastened to the bow B, the adjacent curtain or canopy G of the vehicle being apertured to permit the engagement of said lever and clip. Saidoffset end of the lever extends through the clip F and is fast in a handle H, set at any preferred angle. Thehandleandashoulderof thelever are so arranged with respect to the clip F as to prevent lateral play of said lever. The
handle H within the vehicle-top is operated to work the lever E in link connection with the stretcher A, and thereby raise or lower said top, as occasion may require.
By means of mechanism similar to what is herein shown and described applied in connection with a stretcher and bow of a vehicle- 'top the latter may be readily let down or put up from time to time without inconvenience to the driver of the vehicle, it only bein g necessary to grasp the handle I-I (always within easy reach) and swing the same in the proper direction to attain the desired result.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a link and means for attaching the same to a section of a Vehicle-top stretcher, a lever connected at one end to the link and having its other end inwardly oifset at a right angle to the remainder, a bearing for this offset end of the lever attachable to a bow of said vehicle-top, and
a handle fast on the odset bearing end of,
said lever.
2. The combination of clips respectively attachable to a stretcher-section and a bow of a vehicle-top, a lever having one end thereof at a right angle to the remainder and in hearing engagement with the bow-clip, a handle fast on said end of the lever, and a link connecting the other end of said lever with the stretcher-clip. I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Sheboygan, in the county of Sheboygan and State of Wisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
AUGUST WM. KAVEL. Witnesses:
HENRY O. HOPPE, JOHN H. BRUNS.
