SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 736,556, dated August 18, 1903.

Be it known that I, WILLIAM HALE SHER- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Holding Devices for Telephones, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in paper-holding devices for telephones, an d the main object of my invention is the provision of a device which will hold a roll of paper so that the end thereof may be written upon and torn off, and thus form a convenient means by which messages or orders maybe written when received by telephone.

Another object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character which is the embodiment of simplicity, durability, and inexpensiveness and which is thoroughly eflicient and practical in use.

To attain the desired objects the invention consists of a device of this character embodying novel features of construction substantially as disclosed herein.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a telephone transmitter and receiver with my invention in use thereon.

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device removed and out of use.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the support of the telephone, and B the inclined board forming the top of the batterybox, to which and upon which is secured and rests my improved holding device 0. This device consists of a piece of wire bent to form the two outwardly-extending curved hooks or arms I), which by reason of the coils E are provided with a spring tension toward each other, so as to engage the sides of the support A, and also provide a bearing for the ends of the roll of paper F. Extending downward from these coils are the short-arms G, terminating in the large bail II, intermediate 01'' which are provided the two spring-coils J, which exert a tension downward, so as to cause the bail to rest firmly upon the top of the board B. the rods K is the strap L, which forms a guide for the paper as it leaves the roll and passes below the end of the bail II, and it also can be constructed so as to draw the portions of the holder near the coil J closer together, and thereby assist in supporting the roll of paper and causing the arms D to better contact the support A.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that I provide a very simple, durable and inexpensive device for this purpose and one which will be thoroughly efiicient and practical in use, as the roll of paper is very readily attached in the first place, and when used is readily detached, and, further, for the reason that the holder itself is so easily and quickly applied to the telephone.

\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In combination with a telephone and battery support, and roll of paper, of a device for holding the paper, comprising a single piece of wire having two inwardly-hooked terminals for engaging the telephone-support, bearings for supporting the journals of the roll of paper, means for holding the unwound end of the paper upon the top of the batterysupport so that the paper can be written upon, and means slidably mounted upon said lastmentioned means for guiding the paper from the roll.

A device for the purpose described, comprising a single piece of wire having a substantially U-shaped bail, a pair of short arms G, bent up out of the plane of the bail, coils J at the junctions of the bail and short arms forming springs to hold the bail down upon the top of any suitable support, bearings for a roll of paper at the upper end of said arms a pair of outwardly-extending hooked arms forming terminals of the short arms G, and a strap slidably mounted upon the sides of the bail for guiding the paper from the roll.
