My invention relates to scratch pad devices and more particularly to a scratch pad device that is adapted to carry a roll of paper and is especially adapted for attachment to a telephone. Certain objects of the invention are to provide a scratch pad device of simple and inexpensive construction that is adapted to carry a large amount of paper in roll form. Further objects are to provide a scratch pad device that is readily attachable to phones of different types, that is very easy to manipulate, and which comprises means for retaining the paper smoothly' in stretched form. Other objects are to provide simple means for installing the roll of paper simple means for regulating the tension of the paper and novel guide means for the paper as it is fed through the device.

With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description pro ceeds, the invention consists of the novel construction, adaptation, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. These objects are accomplished by devices illustrated in the accompanying drawing; wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the device showing means for attaching same to the hand-set or French type of telephone wherein the ear and mouth pieces are both embodied in one member;

Referring to the drawing throughout which like reference numerals indicate like parts, thevdevice comprises a casing having a solid slanting top 5 and V-shape side 'walls'` 6 integralA with or fixed to said top. At the acute angles of said side walls the top isfcurved as 'at 7 and as most clearlyshown in Fig.'2 of the drawing. Slightly. above saidycurved portion a transverse bar 8 is pressed upwardly `from the slanting metal Vtop and a lug 9 is punched inwardly from the metal sides adjacent each end of said bar and .bent upwardly in cooperative relation therewith. y The paper 14 is rolled upon a spindle 15 having annulargrooves 16` atits end portions. The larger end portions of the casing kside walls16 are provided with opposite slots 17 that are large enough to receive the ends of :the spindle and have lower reduced portions that receive the annular end grooves of the spindle and serve as bearings therefor. The spindle is installed by springing the sidewalls of the casing outwardly, inserting its ends through the slots and letting the annular grooves drop down-into the reduced ends of said slots asshown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.

After the spindle 15 is installed the paper 14 ispulled under and around the curved end v7 of the top and is threaded under .the bars 8 and 10 and lugs 12 which serve as guides therefor. The end of said paper may be ypulled through the bar 10 and torn off along its edge as will be understood. Tension may be applied to the paper by bending the lugs 9 and 11 upwardly to press the paper against -theftransverse bars for the purf1 pose of keeping same smooth and taut.

The device may be attached to the handv set or French type of phone by means of a bracket arm 18 shown in Fig. 1. Referring to Fig. 5, the device may be attached to vthe ordinary desk type of phone, having an upright mouth-piece stand, by mea-ns of a semiannular bracket clamp 19 pivotally riveted at 20 to one of the sides 6 of the casing, fitted around the stand, and secured on the other endv byra thumb bolt 21. And the device may be mounted on a wall phone by providing the phone box with several vertical slots that are adapted to receive the anges 22 provided on the sides of a clip member 23. Notches 24 are provided in the top edge of said anges where same join the clip member and said notches are adapted to receive the edge portions of the boX at the top of said slots. The clip member is secured to a side 6 of the casing by means of fingers A25 punchedA from the metal of said member, inserted into slots provided in the casing, and one of said fingers bent upwardly and the other bentV downwardly whereby the clip member is clamped to said casing as shown 1 in Fig. 6. The lower end portions of said flanges are slanted or beveled, as at 26, which permits them to fit into slots of different lengths and at the same time provides means whereby pressure on the device, such as caused when writing thereon, forces the` device against the phone box and thus holds same securely in place.`

Havingthus described my invention, it being Yunderstood that minor changes may be resorted to in its construction and arrangement without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United 85 States is A scratch pad device having in combination a casing comprising a slantng top and V-shape sides joined thereto, a curved end portion for said top where same joins the 40 sides at their acute angles, a spindle having a roll of paper mounted thereon, the ends of said spindle mounted in slots in the sides of the casing having lower reduced portions adapted to receive annular grooves in said spindle ends, a transverse bar punched upwardly from eitherl end portion of the `top whereby the paper may pass thereunder, lugs punchedV inwardly from the casing sides and bent upwardly whereby they areadapted to 59 cooperate with the transverse bars in engaging the paper and providing tension therefor,

- and central lugs for the top adapted to serve as guides for the edges of the paper.
