Description
UNITED STATES 1 A Patented August 18, 1903.
PATENT 4, OFFICE.
THOMAS L. STURTEVANT, OF QUIN CY, AND THOMAS J. STURTEVANT, OF WELLESLEY, MASSACHUSETTS.
PITMAN,
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 736,458, dated August 18, 1903.
Application filed May 28, 1903.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS L. STURTE- VANT, residing at Quincy, and THOMAS J. STURTEVANT, residing at Wellesley, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pitmen, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to pitmen and pitmen connections of such construction that they may be attached to a crank or detached therefrom in such a manner that the parts may be readily assembled or dismounted the construction of the parts being such that wear on the pitmen-head bearing parts may be readily compensated for, and, furthermore, such that free and independent rocking movements of the pitmen-head on the crankpin during the stroke of the crank will not be interfered with.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are central sectional views at right angles to each other, illustrating the improved pitmen in assembled condition and in operative relation to a crank-pin; and Fig. 3 is a view showing the several parts disconnected from each other.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes the body portions of the pitmen, which are of a wide beam-shaped form and are provided with segmental or forked portions or heads 13, adapted to bear against opposite sides of a crank-pin, as 14, carried by any suitable crankarm or web, and the body portions of the pitmen are provided, adjacent to said segmental bearing portions 13,with apertures or openings 16 for the reception of lugs or parts 17 of a strap 18 of proper size to embrace or encircle the segmental portions 13 of the pitmen in the assembled condition of the parts, the said strap being preferably formed in two parts secured together by screws or screw-bolts 19 or other fastening devices passing through said lugs 17 and clamping the pitmen-head 13 upon the crankpin 14. An open strap formed in one piece may, however, be employed, if desired,
and in such case the strap will be of elastic metal, as brass, adapted to be opened suffi ciently to be sprung over the crank-pin. The segmental bearing portions 13 of the pitmen are preferably of less than a semicircle in ex- SerialNo.159,144- (No model.)
ent movements of the pitmen-heads are not interferred with, and in which wear can readily be compensated for by tightening the screw bolt or bolts holding the encircling strap together.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination with two pitmen each of which is provided with a segmental bearing portion and with an opening adjacent thereto, of a strap encircling the said se mental bearing portions of said pitmen and extending into the openings adjacent thereto, and means for securing the said strap together.
2. The combination with two pitmen each of which is provided with a segmental bearing portion of less than a semicircle in extent, and with an opening adjacent to said segmental bearing portion, of a strap encircling the said segmental bearing portions of said pitmen and extending into said openings, and a screw or bolt for securing the said strap together.
3. The combination with two pitmen each of which is provided with a segmental bearin g portion of less than a semicircle in extent, and with an opening adjacent to said bearing portion, of a two-part strap encircling the said segmental bearing portions of said pitmen and extendinginto said openings, and screws or bolts for securing the two parts of said
