STEAM-ENGINE CRANK-SHAFT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 276,910, dated May 1, 1883. Appncationnied october 5,1882. (No monti.)
To all ltia/tom ,tt may concern Y Be it known that I, LE GRAND SKINNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvapia, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Steam-Engine Crank-Shafts; and Ido hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot'- theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and-usethe same.
This invention relates tothe construction of crank-shafts of steam-en gines; and it'consists in a new and improved manner of attaching the counter-weight. y
.Theinvention is illustrated in the accompanying' drawings as follows:
Figure l shows in perspective an engine.- shaft with the counter-weights attached thereto in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective 'View of the engine-shaft without any counter-weight. Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are perspective views of the counter-weights, and show alternative constructions thereof.
The object of this invention is to apply a disk havinga countenweight thereon 4to a shaft having a forged crank and pin. When counter-weights are put onto the shaft by means of a disk, the said disks serve to form the crank, the crank-pin being attached to the disk. This construction is objectionable because the crank-pin often twists or turns in its point of attachment with the disk. It is always conceded that a forged crank and pin like Fig. 2 is the best, and by providing means for attaching counter-weights thereto I secure a more desirable and perfect construction.
A c is the forged crank on the shaft a', and it is finished up in substantially the same manner as commonly.
' B is a disk of east metal, having a counterweight, C, thereon. It is cast with an opening, D, which is the same form as the cranks A, and permits the disks to be adjusted upon the cranks, as shown in Fig. 1. The construction of these disks may be varied somewhat, as Iyhave shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5. Said variations relate chiey to the manner of securing them upon the shaft. The construction shown in Fig. 3 is the same as that seen in Fig. 1. In lthis instance the disk is all one piece of metal, while in Fig. et the rim H is a l separate piece of` wrought metal, and is put on after the disk is in place on the shaft by being shrunk on like a tire; otherwise the construction shown in Figs. 3, and et is the same. The construction shown in Fig. 5 differs from that in Fig. 3 in that the disk is made oftwo parts, B' B2, of which B' is a segment of the rim with4 part of the sides of the opening D, and is secured in place by bolts g", which pass through the lugs g g. These parts may be fastened together either before or after the disk is in place upon the shaft. After the disks are in place screw-bolts b b are inserted and secure the disk in place. I do not, however, rely entirely on these bolts for 5a secure fastening, for it is desirable that the disks be so securely fastened that there shall be no chance for the slightest motion or movement of them upon the cranks. They should not only be bolted but sealed. This I accomplish as follows: On the walls of the opening D is a groove, G, all the way around, and on the periphery of the disk is an opening, h, intoA the groove. When the disk is in place upon the crank there is a chamber all the way around the crank, to which access isafforded by the opening h. After the disk hasbeen bolted I pour into this chamber soft metal, like babbitt or lead, until it is full. This completes the fastening and makes it immovable.

2. The combination, with the crank A, of the disk B, having Weight C and opening D, with groove Gr and opening It, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination,with acrank, Ac, forged providedwith means, substantially as shown, which embrace said crank, and thereby secure said counter-weight upon said shaft opposite said crank, substantially as shown.
