E I I ENTOR:.
- ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WAGGONNER, OF NEW HAMPTON, MISSOURI.
PITMAN-COUPLING FOR HARVESTERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,882, dated April 29, 1884-.
Application filed February 15, 184. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
' Be it known that I, J OHN WAGGONNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Hampton, in the county of Harrison and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pitman-Oouplings for Harvesters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description I of the invention, which .will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a 1 part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved coupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a crosssection through line :1; av, showing the pitman set at right angles to the head of the sicklebar; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device for taking up slack or lost motion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. My invention has relation to pitman-couplings for harvesters; and it consists in the im- 2 5 proved construction and combination of parts of the coupling, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, whereby lost motion caused by the wearing out of the connection between the pitman and the head of the sickle- 0 bar may be taken up or compensated for, as occasion requires, in a simple and expeditious manner.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the pit man, and B the head of the sickle-bar,which 5 has the usual lugs or ears, 0, between which the eye D of the pitman is hung or journaled by means of the bolt E. The sides of the ears 0 are rounded or beveled, as shown at F, to I fit the inside of a cup-shaped nut, G, which is screwed upon the inner end of the pitman, and held in place thereon by the jam-nut H. The hollow part or cup of the nut G is of such a shape that it will fit upon and slightly overlap the rounded or beveled shoulders Fpf the lugs or ears 0, and it follows that as this nut 4 is screwed down upon the pitman it will he brought to bear against the ears, without, however, preventing play of the-pitmanin its bearing. 7
' From the foregoing description, taken in 5' connection with the drawings, the operation of the device will be readily understood without requiring further explanation. In order to take up or compensate for lost motion, it is only necessary to screw down the cup-shaped 5 nut G until it bears lightly against the rounded shoulders of the coupling-ears G, and then fasten it in its position upon the pitman by tightening down the jam-nut H. This adjustment can be effected in a moment of time 6 and without uncoupling the pitman from the sickle-bar. V Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 6 The combination, in a pitman-coupling for harvesters, of the sickle-bar head provided with the rounded or beveled ears orprojections 0 F, the coupling pin or bolt, the pitman-rod screw-threaded at its inner end, and 7' having an eye for the insertion of the bolt. the cup-shaped nut adapted to fit the rounded or beveled shoulders F and bear against the same, and the jam-nut whereby the cup is held in its adjusted position, substantially as 7 and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
