SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,940, dated July 11, 1882. A
Application filed June 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES GLAPP, a citizen of the United States,residing at Trumans burg, in the county of Tompkins and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pitman-Heads, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of pitmanheads composed of interlocking sections. its object is to prevent the separation of the pitman and head in case the bolts which connect the sections should become detached; and my invention consists in certain novel organizations in the parts hereinafter specifically claimed.
The accompanying drawings represent my improved pitman-head as especially organized for operation in connection with the cutting apparatus of a harvester. The pitman-head itself only is shown, the construction of the other parts being well known.

The shank A of the head is shown as being made tubular, and as provided with a female screw, a, for the connection of the pitman-rod in usual well-known ways. The pitman-bead is adapted for the use of the well-known balland-socket pitman-joint. The lower section, B, of the head is connected with the neck, and is provided with a transverse groove, 0, for the insertion of a corresponding interlocking flange, c, of the upper section, 0, and with a yoke or stirrup, D in which is inserted a corresponding nose or stud, 0 on the upper section, which latter section is provided with an Oil-hole, g. The ball, secured in well-known ways on the bent end of the cutter-bar or connecting-piece, is inserted in the socket of the head, the two sections when interlocked thus completely inclosing it, with the exception ot the openingin the side through which the bent arm carrying the ball passes. The sections are securelylocked together bya suitablefastenin g, such as the screw-bolt E, provided with jam-nuts e 6 Should the nuts become detached and the screw-bolt drop out, the sections of the head would still be held together by the interlocking portions, instead of allowing them to separate, and thus cause injury,
as they would otherwise be apt to do.
It is obvious that the relative positions of the flange and groove and yoke and stud might be reversed without departing from the spirit of my invention-that is, a flange could be formed on the lower section and a groove on the upper; or. the yoke could be placed on the upper section and the stud on the lower one; or the parts might be reversed, so that the stud on the upper section would take into a recess in the shank on the lower section, 6 while the interlocking flange and groove would beplaced on the opposite side of the socket, where the yoke and stud now are, as shown in the drawings.
I claim as my invention- 1. The base or lower section of the pitmanhead, consisting of a tubular shank for the attachment of the connecting-rod or pitmau, the socket, the transverse groove between the socket and shank, and the locking yoke or stir- 7 rup on the opposite side of the socket.
2. The pitman-head cap, constructed, as set forth, with a socket, a transverse flange on one side thereof, and a lug on the opposite side, for the purposes specified. 8o
3. The sectional interlocking pitman-head hereinbefore described, consisting of the combination of the lower section, its transverse groove, and yoke with the upper section, its
interlocking flange and stud, and the bolt 8 which connects the two sections.
