Description

EDWARD HUBER AND FREDERICK STROBEL, OF MARION, OHIO.
PITMAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 286,008, dated October 2, 1883.
Application filed May 1, 1883. N 0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDWARD HUBER and FREDERICK STRoBEL, citizens of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pitmen, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to pitmen to be used with any machinery where rotary is to be converted into reciprocating motion, and our object is to construct a cheap and durable selfoiling appliance, to be used moreparticularly in thrashing-machines or in similar classes of machinery where it is essential to combine lightness and strength with cheapness and durability.
In the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section; and Fig. 2, a perspective of one of the plates, to be hereinafter described.
In the figures, A represents the pitman proper, and B a metallic strap secured to the head of same. This strap is cast in the shape of an elongated rectangular box with two open sides and an open end. Upon one side is cast an oil-chamber, C, and upon its end is cast a hub, H. This hub has an opening made longitudinally through it, in which is cut a fe male thread and I represents a threaded setscrew, which is made to fit into said opening, and having over or upon it a jam-nut, J.
D D represent the wrist-box, in two parts, and constructed as usual. This box lies between the sides of the strap, as seen, and is additionally confined in its place by means of two flanged plates, F and G. The form of these plates with reference to the flanges is fully represented in Fig. 2. The plates differ in only one respect, the plate G having a boss formed upon it on one side around its center. 0 6 represent flanges which are formed upon these plates. The flanges of plate G embrace the sides of the end of the box, (marked D,) while they extend upward and downward and embrace the sides of the strap B. The plate F embraces not only the sides of the strap, but also the end of the pitman A and the end of that portion of the boxmarked 1). These plates are slipped into place from the open end of the strap.
(2 d represent screw bolts, which pass through the two sides of the'strap and through the pitman A, being securely held there by suitable nuts, as represented. The boss upon plate G is indented in such manner as to receive the rounded end of the set-screw I.
It will be seen that the oil-chamber O'is provided with a plug or stop-screw, K, for open ing or closing the fillingorifice to said chamber at pleasure, and it will :alsobe seen that it has an orificeat its ,bottom opening immediately over the junction of the two parts of the box D D, for allowing oil to be supplied to the wrist.
In putting the parts of this pitman together the plate G is first passed in at the open end of the strap, then the part D, then part D of the box, then plate F, and finally the pitman proper, A, is placed between the sides of the strap, and the whole is made fast by means of the bolts d (Z. The setscrew I serves to close up the plate G upon part D of the box, and thus take up wear on the box or wrist and always keep the partsfitting snugly.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The strap B, cast with one end open, with a hub, H, upon the other, and a globe-shaped oil-chamber, 0, upon one side, in combination with a wrist-box, a pitman, two plates having flanges at each side and end, and a set-screw, I, the several parts being connected, substantially as specified.
2. The plates F and G, provided with flanges at each side and end in such manner as to enable one of them to embrace the pitman, the strap, and on one end of wrist-box. while the other embraces the other end of wrist-box and the sides and end of strap, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures inpresence of two witnesses.
EDWARD HUBER. FRED. STROBEL. Witnesses:
