lvlAelo LANTERN.`
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 736,093, dated August 11, 1903.
Application filed February 11. 1903. Serial No. 142,946. (No model.)
To all whom it Ina-y con/cern:
Be it known that I, SIMON HAMBURGER, a citizen of the United States, residing` in New York, borough of Manhattan, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magic Lanterns, of which the following is a specification.
In the magic lanterns which have been heretofore made the body of the lantern or dark room (camera obscura) has been made of sheet metal, which has the disadvantages that owing to the heat of the lamp or other source of light at the interior of the same it soils the fingers when in use and that the sheet metal7 being a conductor of heat, becomeshot and consequently burns the iingers when passing the slidesthrough between the body of the camera and the lens-tube.
The object of this invention is to so improve toy magic lanterns that the objections referred to are avoided and not only a cleaner magic lantern is obtained, but also one which presents a more ornamental appearance than the sheet-metal magic lanterns heretofore in use, and Jfor this purpose the invention consists of a magic lantern the body of which is composed of a sheet-metal top and bottom, sheet-metal corner-pieces, vertical posts connecting the top and bottom, and side and end Walls made of tiles or other panels, as will be fully described hereinafter, and iinallypointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved magic lantern; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2 2, Fig. l, drawn on a larger scale.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of my improved magic lantern, the topV and bottom as well as the corners of which are made of sheet metal in the usual manner. The bottom B is provided with ornamental feet b and openings o` for permitting the ingress of air to the lamp or other source of light supported on a plate or disk p at the interior of the body A. The rear wall of the body is made of sheet metal and provided with a hinged door d for permitting the insertion or ported by the interior and exterior sheetmetal corners D I). The interior corners D are connected at the top by stays m and the exterior corners D are held in position by the lower plate H, provided with upwardly-extending ilanges h, and the upper plate L, provided with downwardly-eXtending flanges l. With the bottom plate H are connected rods or upright posts E, screw-threaded at their .upper ends and passing upwardly in and between the sheet-metal corners until they protrude beyond the upper plate L. k The upright posts are provided with ball-shaped terminals at their upper screw-threaded ends, and when these are screwed down they clamp the sheetmetal corners between the upper and lower plates. The Inagic lantern Inaybe easily taken apart for cleaning or repairing or replacing the panels should some be broken.
On the top of the body A is supported the chimney F, by which the products of combustion are conducted off. The lens-tube Gr is arranged in the front tile wall and is supported on the guide-frame G', through which the slides are passed in the usual well-lrnown manner.
The use of tile panels for the side and 4end walls of the magic lantern not only improves the ornamental appearance of the same, but prevents the heating of the body and the sweating of the same by the heat of the lamp, so that the magic lantern can be handled when in use and is much neater and cleaner than the sheet-metal structures heretofore in use.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. In a magic lantern, the combination, of a body having the sides and end walls of tiles, sheet-metal top and bottom, and sheet-metal corner-pieces, with means for clamping the the upper ends of the posts for clamping the corner-pieces between the top and bottom for supporting the tiles, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 15 my invention I `have signed my name in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
SIMON HAMBURGER.
tiles and retaining corner-pieces between the top and bottom for holding the tiles in position, substantially as set forth.
2. In a magie lantern, the combination, with a top and bottom of sheet metal, of tile panels forming the side and end Walls of the body of the lantern, angular sheet-metal pieces at the exterior corner of the tiles for retaining the same in position, upright posts between the Witnesses: ends of the tiles and angular corner-pieces PAUL GOEPEL, connecting the top and bottom, and means at C. P. GOEPEL.
