Description
No. 753,599. PATBNTBD MAR. 1, 1904. I. MASON. COMBINED SIGN AND BIRD HOUSE.
n W HIL S n 1 i Patented March 1, 1904.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC MASON, or NEW YORK., N. Y.
ooMBlNED SIGN AND BIRD-HOUSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 753,599, dated March 1, 1904.
i Application filed July 7, 1903. Serial No. 164,540. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC MASON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combined Sign and Bird-House, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in combined signs and bird-houses, the object being to provide a device of this character designed to be attached to a building or similar support and to'so construct it as to not only display advertising matter to good advantage, but to provide a housing in which birds may build their nests, and thus the birds by their flights to and from their nests will serve as an agency to draw attention to the signs.
I will describe a combined sign and birdhouse embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this Specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a combined sign and bird-house embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is an inside view thereof.
The combined sign and bird-house comprises a box-like structure having its Sides arranged at rightangles to each other. These two sides or the outer sides of the sign are indicated at 1 2, and at the edges are inwardlyturned portions or walls 3. These walls and sides are made integral and consist of metal that may be readily bent. This metal portion is mounted on a frame consisting of a bottom board 4, a top board 5, and a vertical central partition 6. Between the partition 6 and the side walls 3 are shelves 7 which are in line with openings 8, formed in the side walls 3, these openings being designed for the ingress and egress of birds to and from the shelvings on which the nests are `to be built. The bottom portion 4 also Serves aS a Shelf upon which nests may be built. The openings 8 are formed by cutting through the metal at the sides and top, permitting the inner portion to be turned downward, as at 9, to form a landing-platform; but when it is not desired that birds shall build their nests in the device the openings may be closed by turning the portions 9 upward and into the openings, as indicated at 10.
The outer side of the structure may be ornamented in any desired manner. I have here indicated it as representing the corner ofla store or the like, and on this outer surface, of course, the sign is to be painted.
As a further means for-attracting attention A box-like structure adapted for advertising matter on its outer side and having openings for the passage of birds, parts at the lower portions of the openings serving as landingplatforms and also as `closures for the openings, and shelving in the structure.
2. In a device for the purpose specified, a box-like structure having its walls arranged at right angles to each other and having inwardly-turned portions at the outer edges of the walls, the said inwardly-turned portions being provided with openings, parts integral with said inwardly-turned portions and adapted to form landings at the lower portions of the openings and also adapted for closing the openings, and shelving in the structure opposite said openings.
3. In a device for the purpose specified, a box-like structure having its outer walls arranged at right angles to each other,l the outer edges of said side walls being turned inward, In testimony whereoflheve signed my name the said walls and inwardly-turned portions to this specification in the presence of two sub- Consisting of sheet metal, and the said inscribing witnesses.
wardly-turned portions being provided with 5 openings, and parts at the lower portions of Witnesses:
Y the openings adapted to be turned to form JOSEPH A. COLLINS,
landings, or turned to form closures. LEO. S. POTTS.
ISAAC MASON.
