Patented August 11,1903.
FRANK T. LPPINOOTT, OF NEWARK, OHIO.
HOSE-CLAM P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,989, dated August 11, 1903.
Application led February 16.1903. Serial No. 143,554. (No model.)
To all wijz/0m t may concern:
Be it known that, FRANK T. 'LIPPINcoTn a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hose Clamps, of which the following is a specification.v
This invention relates to hose-clamps, and is particularly designed to provide certain new and useful improvements over my prior` patent, No. 716,072, dated December 16,1902.
This device is made up in sections which are hinged or pivotally connected in order that they may be drawn snuglyabout a'hose; and it is an essential feature of the invention to provide an improved hinged connection for the clamp sections or members, so as to obviate a projection or uneven portion at the hingejoint and to have the sections so arranged as to present a continuous uninterrupted smooth interior surface, whereby the 'clamp will lie in snug engagement with the hose throughout the entire interior surface thereof. It is furthermore designed to facilitate the engagement of the clamp members or sections, and also to provide for convenience in moving same upon their hinged connection, so as to draw the clamp members into snug engagement with the hose. A
WVith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as willbe hereinf after more fully described, shown in the accompanyin g drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportionJ size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the Apresent invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hose-clamp embodying the features of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the clamp-tightening means. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view taken through the hinged joint of the clamp-sections. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view taken at right angles to Fig. 3, and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail perspective views of the clamp members. Fig. 7
is a detail sectional view on the line 7 7 of Fig. 2.
Like characters of reference designate cor f4, with the slot 3 extended into the ear.
responding parts in each and every figure of the drawings.
The present device is made up of two substantially seinicircular members, (designated by the reference characters 1 and 2, respectively.) The member 1 is somewhat wider than the member 2 and is provided throughout its length with a longitudinal'slot 3 and has one o'o end bent or directed outwardly to form an ear The member 2 is of a width to iit snugly within the Vslot, 3 and has one end terminated in a hook 5, which lies upon the outer side of the member and is adapted to be passed into the slot,
3 and engaged with the end bar 6 of the member l, so as to form a hinged joint therewith,
as clearly indicatedin Fig. 3 of the drawings.
By reference to Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings 7c it will be seen that the end bar 6 of the member 1 is notched or cut away, as indicated at 7, upon its inner side and throughout the width of the slot 3, Wherebythe member l2 is let into the bar in order that its inner face may be flush with and forma continuation of the inner face of the member 1. By this arrangement a projection or hump is prevented at the inner side of the hinged joint between the clamp members, which is a yery important feature 8o of the present invention, as it permits of a snug engagement of the clamp members throughout their entire lengths with the hose.
The free end of the member 2 is provided with an outwardly-directed ear S, which has a socket 8a and is adapted to be passed through the slot ofthe member l, as indicated in Figs. l and 2 of the drawings. It will now be understood that the slot 3 is continued into the ear 4 of the member l, sov as `tofacilitate 9o the introduction of the ear 8 into the slot 3, and thereby overlap the free ends of the members.
After the free ends of the members have been overlapped a nut l0 is placed against the 95 inner side of the ear 4, and an adj listing-screw l1' is passed through the slot of the ear 4, also through the nut l0, and engaged with the socket S in the ear 8, whereby the screw-has a swiveled connection with said ear S. It Ioo will be understood that the nut 10 has one edge resting iiat against the member 2 in or der that it may be locked against turning, so that when the tightening-screw is turned the free ends of the clamp members Will be forced fapart, and the members themselves Will be drawn into snug engagement With the hose.
From the foregoing description it will be understood that the device of the present nvention is very simple and durable, and by reason of the flush joint at the hinged connection between the members the latter are permitted to lie in snug engagement through- 1o out their entire lengths with the hose. Furthermore, by continuing the slot 3 into the ear t the free end portion of the member 2 may be conveniently passed through this slotted ear.
This slotting of the ear 4 is a very important I5 feature of the present invention, for the reason that, when the member 2 has been fitted in the slot 3 the slot of the ear 4 permits of a sufficient looseness of the member 2 to enable the engaging an d disen gagin g of the hook zo 5 with the bar 6, thereby greatly facilitating the application and removal of the clamp.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired. to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
l. Ahose-clamp, embodying opposite members, one of which is provided With an opening and has an end bar at one end of the opening cut away longitudinally at its inner face and between the sides of the opening, the 3o other member being provided With a terminal hook Which loosely engages the end bar of the rst-mentioned member to form a hinged connection between the members, and
said other member also being received With- 3 5 in the notched portion of the end bar and iush With the inner face of the slotted member.
2. A hose-clamp, embodying opposite sections having a hook-and -bar detachable 4o hinged connection, both of said members having their free ends provided with outwardly-directed ears, one of the members being provided with a longitudinal slot extending into its ear, and the other member having its free earend passed through the slotted portion of the ear of the first-mentioned member so as to overlap the same, and means engaging the ears to adjustably separate the free ends of the clamp members to clamp the latter upon a hose.
A hose-clamp, embodying opposite members having a hook and bar detachable hinged connection, both of said members being provided at their free ends with outwardly-directed ears, one of the members having a longitudinal slot extended into its ear, and the other member having its free end passed through the slot of the ear of the first-men tioned'member to overlap the members, a
nut at the inner face of the slotted ear and resting thereagainst, and an adjustingscrew passed through the slotted ear and the nut and engaging the other ear.
4. A hose-clamp, embodying opposite sections, both of which have corresponding ends provided with out Wardly-directed ears, one of the members being Wider than the other and provided With a longitudinal slot extended into its ear and of a Width to receive the other member, said other`member having its opposite end provided with a terminal hook to pass through the slot of the rst-mentioned member and pivotally engaged with the end bar that is opposite the ear thereof, and said end bar being notched at its inner side to let in the hook flush With the inner face of the slotted member, the freeend of the hooked member being passed through the slot of the slotted ear, a nut at the inner side of the slotted ear, and an adjusting-screw passed through the slotted ear and the nut and engaged with the other ear.
