HOSE-REPAIR DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1919.
Application filed July 7, 1916. Serial No 107,994.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Lens J. Annnnson, a citizen of the United States, residin at Grantsburg, in the county of Burnett, tate of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hose-Repair Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to quick repair de-.
vices for hose or other pipes whereby a leak at any point therein may be effectively stopped.
An object of the present invention resides in the provision of a leak-proof clamp conveniently applicable enerally to pipes either flexible or rigid an as readily detachable therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hose clam embodying means of novel construction and arrangement by which it may be securely clamped and locked in position on the hose.
With the above and other objects of similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device applied to a section of hose;
Fig. 2 is a similar view at right angles to Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is an end view, and
Fig. 4 is a transverse section taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, with the clamp in partially open position.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, t e improved clamp. as shown at A, is preferably in the form of a metal casting and comprises two semicircular sections 5 and 6 hingedly connected together as at 7 and movable toward or away from each other for engagement with or disen agement from the hose.
iveted as at 8 or otherwise fixedly secured to the section 5 adjacent its longitudinal free edge portion are spaced segmental racks 9, the teeth 10 of which are curved to provide substantially hooked shaped members opening oppositely from the section 6. Fixed as at 11 adjacent the longitudinal free edge portions of the section 6 are spaced plates 12 corresponding to the racks and terminating at their outer. ends in transversely apertured cars 13.
For actuating the sections 5 and 6 of the clam there is provided a lever 14 of substantlally U-shaped construction. This lever has its legs terminally bifurcated as at 15 to straddle the respective cars 13 and receive therethrough a pintle 16 by which they are pivotally connected with said ears. Straddling each of the legs of the lever 14 and pivoted thereto as at 17 inwardly of the pintle 16 is a yoke member 18, the bight portion of which is interchangeably engageable with the teeth 10 of the correspondmg rack segment 9.
The lever further has its legs longitudinally curved as at 19 whereby when in hormal or looking position to conform to and embrace the related section. Thus should a leak occur in the-hose B at any point in its length, the clamp may be quickly and conveniently applied thereto by opening the sections 5 and 6 or their hinge 7 and so positioning them that when closed, they will encircle the hose at the point of leakage. In order to close and lock the section in clamping relation to the hose, the lever 14 is positioned as shown in Fig. 4 to permit of en gagement of the yokes 18 with the teeth of the respective rack segments and is moved to the position shown in Fig. 1 whereby to draw the yokes and cons uentl the section 5 toward the section 6 arid firml y clamp the hose therebetween. When in such position the sections 5 and 6 are securely locked against relative movement by reason of the fact that the yokes 18 are carried inwardly 'beyond the pivots of the lever 14, and any pressure exerted thereon would serve to more tightly clamp the sections. To prevent leake around the sections the same are provided on their inner faces with a facing of rubber impregnated canvas or other suitable material 20 compressible to seal the opening in the hose, while said sections may further be provided with a series of transversely extending ribs 21 to additionally serve in preventing such leakage. It is of course understood that when applying the clamp to hose sections of different diameters, the yokes are adjusted to engage the proper rack tooth and thus accommodate the clamp to the particular hose with which it is associated.
What is claimed is:
A device of the character described, comprising independent complementally semlcircular shaped rigid sections, hinges secured to the sectlons in spaced relation to each other at one pair of the meeting edges of said sections, ears mounted near the ends of one of the sections adjacent the-other pair of meeting edges, a U-shaped lever pivoted at its ends to said ears and outwardly bowed corresponding to the external contour of the sections to lie snugly against the same, the lever forming a relatively Wide loop handle, yoke members pivoted to the lever at points spaced from the ends connected to the ears, segmental racks fixed to the other section and disposed opposite the ears and having spaced curved teeth adapted to be ad'ustably and detachably engaged by said yo es, transversel disposed ribs formed on the inner faces 0% the sections, and a 0011)- pressible linin interiorly of the sections, secured to an extending over the inner faces of said sections, throughout the extent thereof. i
