UNTED STATES CHARLES lVI. MARKHAM, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN,
ROUND coLtiMN CLAMP.
Application filed November This invention relates more particularly to round column clamps for bonding or holding segmental forms or sections together used in concrete construction.
It is one of the objects of the present invention to provide a round column clamp to facilitate the construction of concrete forms and columns and to avoid the waste of lumber in the construction thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a round column clamp which is adjustable to columns of different diameters and which, when adjusted will hold the segments or sections of the form firmly in position.
A further object of the invention is: to provide a round column clamp in which the parts will be automatically maintained in clamping position when tightened.
A further object of the invention is to provide a round column clamp which may be easily and quickly applied to or removed from a form, and which is of the highest efficiency and yet of very simple construction and is inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the improved round column clamp and its parts and combinations as set forth in the claims, and all equivalents thereof.
In the accompanying drawings, in which the same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the views:
Fig. l is a perspective view of sectors of a concrete column form shown clamped to gether by the improved round column clamp;
F ig. 2 is a face view of the clamp member and a portion of the clamping strap; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 5 indicates a flexible metal band or strap of a length sufficient to encircle' the forms of an 15, 1919. serial no. 338,410.
ordinary concrete column of the maximum diameter. To one end of the band is fastened by means of rivets 6, the base portion 7 of a clamping member 8. The inner side of said base portion 7 is curved as indicated by 7 and is provided with a channel 8 to receive the band and permit the base portion to lie close against the form and the band to be flush with the said inner surface of the base portion. The outer end side edge portions of the base is provided with outwardly` extending parallel ears 9 to receive therebetween a cam member l0 which is connected to the ears by a pivot pin l1. The band en gaging face 10 of the cam member is eccentric with relation to the pivot pin ll and opens in a direction towards the connected end of the band and closes in the opposite direction to clamp the free end of the band between the cam face and the base portion. As thus constructed the greater the strain, the more firm the cani member will clamp the band and maintain it in adjusted positio-n. In order to form a more firm clamping surface the curved face of the cam member is formed with transversely extending teeth l2 which bite into the band when in closed position. The inner end of the base portion 7 is angled upwardly to form a shoulder 13 which is adapted to be engaged by any desirable means, (not shown) used for tightening the band around the form.
In use the band is placed around the form and the free end of the band is extended between the ears and the base and the clamp, and the clamp is swung to closed position. A band tightening device is then connected to the free end of the band and to the base member and the band is drawn tightly around the column form and will be automatically clamped in adjusted position and maintained in said position as long as desired.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the improved round column clamp is of very simple construction and. is well adapted for the vpurpose described.
What I claim as my invention is:
A. clamp for holding segmental forms together in constructing concrete columns, comprising a horizontal curved clamping member having outwardly extending ears near one end thereof, a circular flexible metal band connected to the inner side of the opposite end portion of the clamping member and having its free end extending aroundrthe outerside of theelempingmember and between the ears thereof; ende oem member positioned between the ears and pivotally connected thereto and having a, rounded hub portion free from projections and an inwardly extending` oem surface with transversely extending teeth which automatically impinge against the outersurface of the free end portion of the band and clump it to the smooth outer surface of the 10 In testimony whereof, I aix my signa- 15 tu re.
CHARLES M. MARKHAM.
