PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN HOFF, OF'OWIN'GS MILLS, MARYLAND.
CULINARY UTENSIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. r235,513, dated August 41903.
Y I Application led March 11, 1903. Serial No. 147.223. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, it nur/y concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN HOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owings Mills, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Culinary Utensils, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in a culinary utensil, and is particularly designed for separating corn 'from the cob.
The invention consists in the novel construction, combination, 'and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings. f
Figure l illustrates a perspective View of my improved device; Fig. 2, a vertical section on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the box, slitting-pins, and scraperplate; and Fig. 4, a vertical longitudinal section of the base.
In the drawings, a designates a base of any suitablematerial, but preferably of wood, and is provided with a slot b, which extends crosswise thereof, and is also provided on its upper side with a rectangular recess or depression c, which latter surrounds said slot and at opposite sides thereof forms a ledge c. The base is also provided at 011e side with a hole d, which extends through said base and opens into Vthe slot b. A box c its into the slot b and is provided with an opening f, and at its upper side said box is also provided with a flange or plate g, which projects laterally from each side thereof, and when in position on said base the iiange g fits into the recess c, and the top surfaces of said fiange and base are iiush. A hole h in the side of the box below the iiange g registers with the hole d in the side of the base a, as seen in Fig. 2. The box e is also provided at opposite sides of the opening f with a vertical slot or groove e', and one ofv said grooves passes directly over the hole h in said box. A plate j slides in said grooves,
and the latter hold the plate in a vertical position in Asaid opening. A screw 7c passes through the hole d of the base and also through the hole h of the box, and the end. of
said screw impinges against or contacts with the vertical edge j' of theplatej and secures the latter against vertical displacement. The plate or flange g is also provided witha series of vertically-projecting -pins Z, which are provided with tapered or beveled upperV ends l. In the present instance two rows of these pins are shown extending along the edge of the openingf. v
The box e, flange g, and pins Z are of a single casting, and the cost of production is thereby greatly reduced.
In operation the corn while on the cob is moved in a direction longitudinally of the base and over the beveled ends Z of the pins Z, which latter split or cut the hull and grain, and the split grain is then passed over the upper horizontal edge of the plate j and the pulp is squeezed out of the hull and falls down through-the opening f.
Having thus fully described my invention, WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
vThe combination with a base havinga slot and a rectangular recess surrounding said slot, said base also having a hole in its side which opens into said slot; a box fitting in p said slot in the base and having a flange which fits into said recess and also having an opening which extends from said flange through its bottom, said box also having a vertical groove at opposite sides of said opening and a hole through its vertical wall which opens into said groove; a plate secured in the vertical grooves of said box, and a screw passing through the hole in said box and in said base and contacting with said plate.
In testimony whereof I aftixl my signature in the presence of two witnesses'.
JOHN HOFF.
