No. 540,286; Patented June 4, 1895.
FRED WVAITE, OF OTLEY, ENGLAND, ASSIGN OR TO WVAITE d SAVILLE, LIMITED, OF SAME PLACE.
PRINTERS Quotes.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 540,286, dated June 4;, 1895. Application filed October 29. 1894. $erial Not 527,306. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRED WAITE, a subject. of the Queen of England, residing at Otley, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printers Quoins, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in printers quoins, and its object is to provide a simple and readily adjustable quoin without loose parts and free from any liability to slip or shake loose. For this purpose I employ a guide piece having parallel guides between or upon which guides a sliding or adjustable block is fitted. This sliding block is adjusted within the said guidesto expand or contract the quoin-by means of a screw fitting a female screw thread cut in the block. To keep the sliding block in position in the guide piece the head of the screw operating the sliding block may lie in a recess in the said guide piece and be so arranged that while it is perfectly free to be rotated, to turn the screw, it is prevented from longitudinal movement in relation to the guide piece.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures.
Figure '1 represents a plan view of my improved quoin. Fig. 2 represents a side view, and Fig. an end view, of the same. Fig. at represents a sectional view on the broken line a b, Fig. 1. Figs. 5 and 6 respectively represent a separate plan view of the guidepiece and the sliding block.
.The guide pieceAis provided with parallel guides B, B between which the sliding block 0 is fitted. Said piece A has the transverse portions A, A The screw D fits the female screw thread cut in the hole E through the block 0 and its head F lies in the opening or recess G formed in the guide piece A between the transverse portions A A and the screw is thereby confined longitudinally. Holes H are drilled through the head of the screw to admit the end of a lever to tighten "up the screw when the quoin is in position.
The under side of the sliding piece is preferably a little above the under side of the guide piece so as to allow it to slide freely in or out when in position; and to maintain the sliding block in this position in relation to the guide piece the sliding block is provided with lateral lips J, J arranged to rest upon the top of the guides B, B.
I claim 1. In a printers quoin, the combination with the guide piece A provided with parallel guides B, B, of the sliding block G fitted and adapted to-slide between said guides, the bottom of the block being above the bottom of the guide piece, for the purpose specified.
2. In a printers quoin, the combination with the guide piece A provided with parallel guides B, B, of the sliding block 0 fitted and adapted to slide between said guides, the bottom of the block being above the bottom of the guide piece, and the lateral lips J, .l, on the block 0 resting upon the upper face of the guides, as and for the purpose specified.
3. In a printers quoin, the combinationwith the guide piece A provided with parallel guides B, B, the transverse portions A A on said guide piece, the latter having an opening G between said portions, the sliding blockfil fitted and adapted to slide between said guides and having a threaded opening, and the portion Abeing provided with an opening and a headed screw working in. the opening in block 0 and passing through the opening inthe portion A and the head of the screw lying within the opening G between the portions A A of the guide piece, as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
FRED VVAITE.

DAVID NORVELL, SAMUEL A. DEAOUP.
