UNITED s'rxriis arser err-ion WILLIAM CLARK, OF BULGER, AND THOMAS IBEADLING, OF CARNEGIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
TROLLEY-WIRE SPLICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 19, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, (1) WVILLIAM CLARK and (2) Ti-IoMAs BEADLING, citizens of the United States of America, residing at (1) Bulger and (2) Carnegie, in the counties of (1) WVashington and (2) Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-Vl ire Splices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to trolley wire splice, and has for its object to provide a device of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with means to permit of adjusting the length of the splice member or for decreasing the length of said member to maintain the trolley wire taut.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a trolley wire splice, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient and convenient in its use, readily set up and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a trolley wire splice in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an elevation partly in longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is a cross sectional View.
A trolley wire splice in accordance with this invention consists of a member formed of two sections, one of which is indicated at 1 and the other at 5. Each of the sections is formed with an annular groove 6 and an inclined opening 7, the latter extending from the bottom to the top of its respective member and communicates at its lower end with the inner terminus of the groove 6. The opposing ends of the sections of the trolley wire are mounted in the groove 6 and extend up through the formed with an inwardly extending offset 12 having formed integral therewith a pair of tongues 13 and 14, and a pocket 1 1, the tongue 14: being arranged below and of less thickness than the former. The pocket 10 is rectangular in contour and the tongue 13 in cross section is of the same contour as the pocket 10. The tongue 13 snugly fits into the pocket 10 and is provided throughout with transverse openings 15, any one of which is adapted to register with a transverse opening 16, which is intersected by the pocket 10. The tongue 13 is detachably connected to the section 4 through the medium of a bolt 17, which extends through the opening 16 and that opening 15 which alines therewith. The bolt 17 is provided with a head 8 and interposed between said head and projection 10 is a shoulder 20. The bolt 17 projects through the extension 9 and has the projecting end thereof threaded. Engaging with the threaded end of the bolt 17 is a nut 19 and interposed between the nut and the extension 19 is a shoulder 20. The tongue 11 extends into the groove 1% and has its inner face inclining in a direction toward the free terminus of said tongue. The groove 14 extends at an opposite inclination with respect to the inner face of the tongue 11.
What we claim is A trolley wire splice comprising a member formed of two inter-locking sections, one of said sections provided with upper and lower lateral extensions forming a longitudinal pocket, the other of said sections provided with an upper and lower tongues forming a longitudinal groove adapted for the reception of the lower of said lateral extensions and one of said longitudinal grooves being adapted for the reception of the upper of said tongues, said last named In testiinonywhereofiwe afiix our signatongue provided With transverse openings, tures;intheepresence of two itnesses.
that section provided With a pocket having WILLIAM CLARK.
an opening adapted to aline With one of THOMAS BEADLING. the tongue openings, and a bolt extended through said alining openings forndetaohe ably connecting the sections together.
