ALBERT WILLIAM URWIGK, OF BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND.
EXERCISING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 735,319, dated August 4, 1903. Application filed May 5, 1902. Serial No. 106,016. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern;
Be it known that I, ALBERT WILLIAM UR- WICK, warehonseman, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 42 Cherry street, Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Developing and Strengthening the Muscles of the Legs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved device or exercising apparatus for developing a and strengthening the muscles of the legs, the
said device being of a simple and portable construction.
According to this invention the device or apparatus is in the form of a seesaw, upon the center of which the user places his foot for operating the same by the alternate pressure of the toes and heel thereon.
The apparatus consists of a longitudinal board or base provided with two uprights or brackets, forming bearings for a pivotal bar or axis supporting a second longitudinal board,constituting the swinging or exercising portion of the device. Each end of this board is provided with a coiled spring, the other ends of which springs are connected to the base-board at points a short distance apart on either side of the center of said baseboard. These springs tend to keep the upper or swinging board in its horizontal position,
In order to clearly understand the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, representing a side view of the apparatus.
a is the base-board, b the two uprights or bearings fixed thereto, and c is the swinging or exercising board; I a
dis the bar or axle, pivoted in the bearings b and supporting the board 0.
e e are the springs, connected at one end to the ends of the board 0 by means of the hooks f and attached at their other ends to the board a by the hooks g, the hooks f and 9 being secured by the plates 72.
The operator places his foot upon the board 0 in the center thereof and presses with his toes and heel thereon alternately against the power of the springs e c. This causes a swinging or seesaw action to be imparted to the board a, the up-and-down motion acting upon the muscles of the legs to strengthen and develop them.
The springs are detachable, so as to substitute others of greater or less strength, as desired.
Having now fully described the nature of my said invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an apparatus for developing and strengthening the muscles of the legs the combination of a board or base, side brackets attached thereto, a cross-bar or axis pivoted in the said bracket-s, a longitudinal board supported by said axis and upon the center of which the operator places his foot to produce a swinging action, and coiled detachable springs attached to the ends of the said boards and to the base to regulate the force or power necessary to act upon and move the board, substantially as described and shown.
ALBERT WILLIAM URWIGK.
