PATENT OFFICE.
ADJUSTABLE M ET AL L EG'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,509, dated July 28, 1903.
Application filed April 22, 1903.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AGOB CAESAR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Metal Leg, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to legs for sinks, lavatories, wash-trays, or any articles using legs varying in length; and the object thereof is to provide a leg which can be readily adjusted to different heights, which will always be rigid, and which will be cheap to manufacture, a further object being to provide for the easy casting of a leg of this kind and for the quick adjusting of the leg to floors of different kinds.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of an adjustable leg constructed according to my invention, parts being broken away to show the construction. Fig. 2 is a cross-section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view thereof; and Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, showing a modified form of construction.
In the accompanying drawings the several parts of my invention are indicated by numerals of reference, and in practice I provide a metal leg 5 with an adjustable sleeve 6, which is provided with a rib or rail 7, extending a part of the length thereof and which works in a slot 8, formed in the upper part of the leg 5, extending from the top'thereof down substantially as far as the rib 7 is long. The leg 5 is thickened on the inside at the upper end, as shown at 9, and the slot 8 extends through said thickened part in a flaring manner, so that the side walls through said thickened part are beveled and are provided with serrations or teeth 10, which extend transversely of said beveled walls, the straight walls being left substantially smooth, so that there will be nothing to interfere with the sliding of the rail 7 up and down in said slot. Oountersunk in the sleeve 6 is a screw-headed bolt 11, which passes centrally through said rail, and mounted on the inner end of said bolt is a nut 12, which is proportioned in size so that it will pass part Way through the flar- Serial No. 153,832. (No model.)
ing part of said slot and will be drawn into close contact with the teeth 10 when the bolt .is screwed tightly into said nut.
the nut tightly against the teeth of the bev-.
eled edges of the slot and not only looks the sleeve against further vertical movement, but secures it very rigidly in place and makes a very firm leg.
In Fig. 4 the construction and operation are the same throughout, except that the beveled edges of the slot 8 are not provided with teeth.
At the upper end of the slot I provide an integral cross-bar 13 to strengthen the leg, as the strain is considerable when the nut is drawn into the slot, especially where the teeth are used.
Formerly in making adjustable legs it was customary to use an iron or steel rod extending entirely through the leg, and the adjustable means were connected with this at the upper end, while the lower end was allowed to project through the bottom of the leg where desired to enter a socket in the floor to hold the lower end rigidy In casting the legs the core could be provided with an integral projecting stud at the bottom to support the same in position, as the resultant hole could be utilized for the rod.
In my invention it is necessary to have a support for the core at the bottom, and as it is often desirable to have the pin extending below the end of the leg to enter a socket, especially where wooden floors are used, lprovide a small cast pin 14, which I insert in the end of the core when formed, as will be readily understood, and when the casting is completed the pin will remain in the lower end of the leg, as shown in Fig. 1, a portion thereof projecting through the leg, (indicated by 15,) and if it is desired to use this to steady the leg by providing a socket the part 15 is left and is utilized the same as the lower end of the rod previously described; but it not wanted the part 15 can be easily broken off, as it is composed of cast-iron.
It will thus be seen that I have provided simple and efficient means to support the core at the lower end without making a hole in the bottom of the leg, and at the same time I have provided a support for the lower end of the leg, if desired.
It will of course be evident that the head of the bolt could be mounted between the beveled edges of the slot instead of the nut without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. An adjustable leg com prising a body portion provided with a slot, a sleeve, a bolt passing through said sleeve and slot, and a nut on said bolt in engagement with the side walls of said slot, for the purpose set forth.
2. An adjustableleg comprisinga body portion provided with aslot havingbeveled side walls, a sleeve, a bolt passing through said sleeve and slot, and a nut on said bolt proportioned in size to pass part way through said slot in engagement with said beveled walls, as and for the purpose described.
3. An adjustable leg comprisinga bodyportion provided with a slot having beveled side walls, a sleeve provided with a vertical rib, or rail, mounted in said slot, a bolt passing through said sleeve and rail, and a nut on said bolt less in width than the inner opening of said slot whereby the edges of said nut are drawn against said beveled walls, as and for the purpose set forth.
4. An adjustable leg comprisinga body portion provided with a slot with side walls straight at the outer edge and beveled at the inner edge, said beveled parts being provided with serrations or teeth, a sleeve provided with a rib or rail adapted to move in said slot, a bolt passing through said sleeve and rail, and through said slot, and a nut on said bolt proportioned in size that the edges thereof will engage said toothed walls, as and for the purpose described.
, 5. An adjustable leg comprising a body portion provided at the bottom with a cast-metal pin, and at the top with a longitudinal slot having beveled edges, a sleeve having a rib or rail adapted to move in said slot, a bolt passing through said sleeve and rail, and a nut on said bolt proportioned in size so that the edges thereof will engage said beveled edges, as and for the purpose described.
6. An adjustable leg comprising a body portion provided with a slot having beveled side walls provided with serrations or teeth, a sleeve provided with a rib, or rail, a bolt passing through said sleeve and rail, and through said slot, a nut on said bolt proportioned in size so that the edges thereof will engage said toothed side walls, and an integral bar extending across said slot adjacent to the upperend thereof, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB CAESAR.
