GASKET HANDLE.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 17, 1908.

iwazzm UNITED STATES SETH WILLIAM BABBITT, OF MERIDEN, CONNECTICUT.
CASE T-HANDLE Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 17, 1908.
Patented Dec. 8, 1908.
Serial No. 448,899.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH WILLIAM BAB- BITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casket- Handles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention contemplates the construction of a casket handle adapted to be moved against the casket body when a casket is disposed in a grave.
One of the objects of the invention is the production of a casket handle adapted to be moved horizontally on the casket body so as to occupy less space when it is desired to dispose the casket in a grave.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described and particularly pointed out in the a pended claim, and in the drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved handle secured to a casket; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view of a part of the handle.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a casket body formed with side openings, 2 and 3.
4 designates a handle which may be made of any form and style having a plurality of lateral arms, 5, and 6, extending therefrom. The arms, 5 and 6, are mounted on the handle, 4, and may be reinforced by sleeves, 7, which are adapted to embrace the handle, 4. Washer plates, 8, formed with bushings, 9, are inserted in the openings, 2, 3, and each of the bushings is formed with end slots, 10. The washer plates are secured on the casket body by means of suitable screws, 11, which extend into the body of the casket.
The arms, 5 and 6 are adapted to extend through the bushings, 9, and a plurality of stop pins, 12, are'threaded on the ends of the arms, 5 and 6, and the slots, 10, of bushings, 9, are arranged to register with slots, 13, communicating with the openings, 2 and 3, formed in the casket body, 1. When extended through the bushings, 9, the arms 5 and 6 may be moved horizontally thereon by simply pulling the handle, 4, away from the casket body or pressing the same toward the casket body. The arms 5 and 6 are revented from leaving the openings, 2 an 3, and the bushings, 9, by means of the stop pins, 12, which are adapted to move in the slots, 13, of the casket body, and the slots 10 of the bushings.
The casket handles at present in use have i been found to be unsatisfactory and to imerfectly fold against the casket body.
ith my improved handle there is no vertical movement, and, consequently, the weight of the casket in no way afiects the utility of a handle. When it is desired to fold the handle against the casket body, all that is necessary is to push the handle inwardly thereagainst.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
A casket formed with transverse openings, longitudinally spaced slotted supporting members secured to the casket and in the openings, a handle movable against the casket in a horizontal plane supported by the slotted members and pins movable in the slots of said members for limiting the movement of the handle against the casket.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' SETH WILLIAM BABBITT.
