PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW WILDMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOISASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO NORMAN L. HAYDEN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
ARutas.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 734,149, dated July 21, 1903.
Application led October 20, 1902. Serial No. 127,946. (No model.)
.To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW WILDMAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new l and useful Improvements in Rules, of which -the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rules; and its object is to produce a device of this class which shall combine the advantages of an ordinary pocketrule with certain of the advantages of a miter-square.
To these and certain minor ends my invention consists in certain novel features of construction clearly illustrated in the accompan ying drawings and fully described in the following specification.
In the aforesaid drawings, Figure lis a plan of my improved rule. Fig. 2 is a section in Fig. 3 is a perspective of a portion of the rule shown in the left-hand portion of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a section in the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an end view of the rule looking in the direction of the arrowof Fig. l. Fig. 6isa view of the springdetent, and Fig. 7 is a section through a modiiied form of the rule.
Referring to the drawings, A A' A2 A3 are four portions of a rule hinged together by hinges a a. after the manner of an ordinary- -thereof is deemed necessary. The portion A of the rule is cut away to form a recess B, in which lies an arm C, pivoted upon aset-screw c at one end of the member A. The arm C is exactly the breadth of the recess B, so that when it is swung as far as possible toward the portion A of the rule it will occupy the cut-out space beyond the shoulder and lie flush with the remainder of the surface of the member A.` The end of the arm C adjacent to the pivot is enlarged to form a circular portion C', which is providedl with a number of notches c. .AspringD is secured to the member A, as shown in the drawings, and this spring is provided with a tooth or detent d, which engages the notches c' of the head of the arm C. The tooth d and the notches c are formed in such manner that when the arm C is placed in position to bring the :tooth into engagement with any one of the notches the arm will be held quite firmly in position. The strength of the spring is, however, such that a slight force will suffice to move the arm. The notches are in practice so positioned on the head of the arm C that the said arm canv be automatically locked closed or at an angle ofthirty, forty-live, sixty, or ninety degrees with respect to the member A. In Fig. 1 the arm is shown set at an angle of thirty degrees.
The uses to which rules of this sort can be put are very numerous. It can be used as a T-square lor miter-square with great ease and effectiveness and when closed occupies no more space than an ordinary pocket-rule.
The modified form of device shown in Fig. 7 is one wherein the arm C swings into a lonf gitudinal slot in the member A. It of course 'operates in substantially the same way as the 'arm in the form shown, and I consider this form to have most of the advantages of thev preferred form.
I realize that considerable changes can be made in the device above described, and I do not, therefore, desire to limit myself to the specific form shown.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a device of the class described, the combination with the members, A,A', A2, A3, and hinges, a', a, securing said members pivotally together to form a rule, of a recess, B, formed at one side of the member, A, an arm, C, pivoted at one end of the member, A, and adapted to swing over said recess and lie ush with the surface of said member, A, said arm being provided with a head, C', in the form of an arc of a circle and provided with a plurality of notches, c'., a spring, D, secured to said member, A," and a tooth, d, mounted upon said spring, D, and held thereby in yielding engagement with said head, C, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have signed the above application for Letters Patent, at Chicago, in
the county of Cook and State of Illinois,`this 15th day of'October, A. D, 1902.
ANDREW WILD MAN.
