To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. TUPPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State. of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in pipe-wrenches, the object of my invention being to provide a device of this character which shall be simple in construction and in which the jaws will move toward each other in an efficient manner to firmly grip the pipe.
My invention therefore resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts for the above ends hereinafter fully specified, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the pipe-wrench in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken immediately above the handle of the pivoted jaw, showing the parts in the open position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pivoted jaw detached. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the roller detached.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the stationary member, having fixed therein the pivot-pin 2, while 3 represents the movable member rotating around said pivot-pin. The shank 4 of the movable member is passed through an elongated opening formed in the stationary member, and the outward movement of the jaw 5 thereof is limited by abutment of the outer edge of said shank 4: with one side 6 of said opening, while its inward movement is limited by abutment of the innor edge of said shank with the opposite side 7 of said opening and also by the abutment of the lower portions 8 of the two jaws. and in the rear edge of the shank of the movable member is formed a rounded socket 10, which engages said roller. The pivot-pin is placed substantially in line with the back edge of' said movable jaw and therefore at a considerable distance from the central line between the jaw-faces. To enable this to be done, the fixed member is extended outward to a considerable distance beyond the rear edge of the movable member to provide strength to resist the strain upon the pivotpin. By placing this pivot substantially in line with the rear edge of the movable jaw the face of said movable jaw is given almost a parallel movementthat is to say, the extreme end of said face moves directly toward the end of the face of the opposite jaw, while the inner end of said face moves substantially in line with the face of the jaw. This movement gives a much better grip upon the pipe for a given size of wrench.
I claim- A pipe-wrench comprising a fixed member havingan elongated aperture therethrough, and a shank extending rearwardly from said aperture, a movable jaw a shank of which extends through said aperture, and the edges of which shank abut against the opposing sides of theaperture to limit the movement thereof, a pivot pin secured in said fixed member and passing across said aperture,and a roller around said pivot-pin, the-rear edge of the shank of the movable jaw having a curved socket to conform to the shape of the roller, substantially as described.
