EMIL WERNER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED STAND AND EASEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No; 733,100, dated July 7, 1903. Application filed November 22,1901. 'SerialNo. 88,232. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, EMIL WERNER, a citizen of the United, States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combined Stand andEasel, of which the following is a specification. f
My invention consists of an improvement in a combined stand or trestle and easel, the object being to provide a device of this character so constructed that it can be readily changed from a stand to an easel, which is capable of various adjustments as to height and the inclination of its bed or top, which is rigid and stable, and which can be folded into a small compass.
It further consists ofnovel details of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of a combined easel and stand when the same is arranged as an easel. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of thesame when arranged as a stand for a drawing-board or the like. Fig. 3 represents a perspective View when the device is folded.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, A and B designate the supporting-legs, the legs Abeing suitably connected by cross-pieces O at the top and bottom, while the legs 13 are connected by a cross-piece D near their lower ends and are pivoted at their upper ends to the legsA by the pivots E. Hook F upon one of the legs and eyes G upon the other serve to hold the legs separated and in position to support the parts' carried thereby.
To the upperend of the support formed by" the legs A and cross-piece O is pivoted a frame consisting of side pieces H, that are conveniently pivoted at their lower ends to the upper cross-piece C and are connected by a crosspiece J at their upper ends. K designates a cross-bar from which depends the arms L, said partsbeing rigidly connected together and being sharpened at their lower ends to engage the teeth or notches M in the legs A. The arms L are pivoted at their so upper ends to the side pieces H of said frame.
Hinged or pivoted to the upper end of the frame composed of the pieces H and J is the bed or top of the stand or easel, the same 0011- veniently consisting of a frame having side pieces Q and cross-pieces R and S, the lower cross-piece Sbeing hinged to the cross-piece J of said frame and being provided with a ledge T, as is usual with easels. The under sides of the side pieces Q are provided with notches or teeth U, which are adapted to be'engaged by pivoted supports V and W, so that the bed or top of the stand or easel can be held in dif ferent positions. The support V consists of the side pieces X and beveled top piece Y, the side pieces W being pivoted to the side pieces H of the frame. The support WV consists of the side pieces Z, that are pivoted to the arms L and are connected by a cross-piece A, the upper ends of the side pieces Z being sharpened to engage said teeth U. It will be noted that the side pieces Z of the support V are pivoted in line with the side pieces U of the top of the stand or easel and inwardly of the side pieces X of the support V, so that these supports can pass each other.
The operation is as follows: Then the device is to be made into an easel, the frame composed of the side pieces H and cross-piece J is raised, for instance, until the arms L engage the teeth M near the upper end of the legs A. Then the top or bed is raised to the position shown in Fig. 1 and supported in this position by the engagement of the cross-piece Y of the support V with the teeth U thereof. The support WV is not used when the parts are in this position, but can stand, as shown in Fig. 1, or be thrown to the rear until it rests upon the upper end of the legs A,as desired.
By lowering the frame and, the legs L carried thereby until the lower teeth are engaged the height of the easel may be varied, and the inclination of the bed or top can also be changed by passing the cross-piece Yin engagement with other of the teeth U. If it is desired to make a stand for a drawing-board, the parts may be brought to the position shown in Fig. 2, wherein the support X is thrown to the rear until it is supported by the stops B, formed by the ends of the cross-piece U, and then the support W is employed. It is also readily seen that by shifting the different parts to other positions the bed or top of the device can be brought to a horizontal position and at varying heights, as will be obvious.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the device as folded up or collapsed, so that When not in use it will occupy a small compass.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the kind specified, a suitable support, a frame pivoted thereon and provided with means for supporting the same in different positions relative to said support, a bed pivoted to said frame and provided with separate and independent means for directly engaging and holding said bed in different positions relative to said frame, said means being supported by said frame and independ- 'ently movable and capable of separately and independently directly engaging said bed, whereby When one of said bed-supporting means engages and holds said bed in one position, the other of said bed-supporting means is disengaged therefrom.
2. In a device of the kind specified, a suit- 3. I11 a device of the kind specified, a suitable support provided with toothed legs, a frame pivoted to said support and provided With pivoted arms adapted to engage said toothed legs, a bed pivoted to said frame and provided With toothed portions, a support pivoted to said arms adapted to engage the toothed portion of said bed, and a support pivoted to said frame andadapted to engage the toothed portion of said bed.
EMIL WERNER.
